Re: Email at work

Re: Email at work

As far as I know it's illegal in the EU to read e-mails of your employees and/or colleagues. The only thing you are allowed to do is, view their network traffic, ie how extensively they use the internet and if there is something suspicious you are even allowed to view the URLs visited by your employee. But not more than that.

And definitely you are not allowed to delete e-mails of someone else.

Re: Email at work

Ditto, here in EU we have something called 'private atmoshphere' of employees, its strickly not allowed to read emails of other colleagues or those under you and certainly not delete their emails from their emailboxes.
Everyone recieves, sends private emails from their office emails, but it should be limited and not take the upper hand. I think companies know that their employees are using their office email account for private purpose but as long as you dont misuse the account or participate in illegal activities, its not such a fuss.

sadz, I cant believe that your boss has done such a thing, try to find out if he has done this to others too. I dont know the laws in AUS but try to take action against him, if he's done it wrongly.

Re: Email at work

SaadiaB, I agree with u,,, nobody is allowed to read or delete your email - passwords are kept strictly secret!... a friend of mine got booted from his job - there were 3 of us, and between ourselves we used to send approx 300-400 emails per day - just 1liners,, his network traffic was monitored, and so he got caught!...,,

Saaadzz,,, sad news,, regardless of company property, digital rights etc,,, its not "ethically" correct to read personal emails let alone delete them after having read them,,,,, I would say that monitoring network traffic is OK to a certain extent,,, but what your manager has done is not right,,, my simple conclusion is that ur manager deserves a good hammering....

Re: Email at work

sadzz yaar with respect but don't you think your boss has been very kind to you to date. I mean from my understanding, you browse gupshup from your work place rite? correct me if i'm wrong.

i mean one goes to work to work rite :D] but you have a extraordinary boss who let's you mix work with pleasure {i mean't well by that} :D]

so you know, consider this is a let off that he only checked your e-mails and didn't somehow block access to gupsitan.com.

Re: Email at work

it's strictly forbidden in our company.

Re: Email at work

what a loser.....just imaging how much company time he wasted going through the e-mails.

Re: Email at work

Very sad to hear this ... damage has already been done and there is no benefit in getting upset. I think it is time you review your resume and look for a job. With 4-5 yrs of job experience, it won't take long for you to find a great job.

Good luck :)

Re: Email at work

huh?
that just sounds like totally insane....
why would they delete folders like that?
deleting is a step further than reading.
u shud never use the same email address for work and personal stuff.
ive only given my work email address to workmates and some close family and friends and even if they happen to send me a personal email there, i fwd it to my personal email a/c and reply from there
plus, never leave ur personal stuff on ur office pc. call me paranoid but i go to the extent of cleaning out my office pc of all personal stuff everyday before i leave (INCLUDING history of websites visited, cookies etc, everything).
the assumption at the back of my mind is that this stuff is after all on a work pc which is public and yeah the company does have a right sorta to look at whatever emails u send and receive on the email address they provided to u for work purposes. so better be safe than sorry is the policy i followed right from the beginning.
but still...this totally sucks

Re: Email at work

I am not sure if this rule applies everywhere or not.. but here at my company I had to write a software extension to check for incoming spams and outgoing emails

BUT as i remember it NONE of the employee was allowed to read the email for any other EMPLOYEE unless the court orders have been issued.

We use software programs to make sure that the outgoing email is appropiate.

For example, we had a checking system where it will scan the attachments (both incoming and outgoing) to make sure virus, porn and spyware is not a threat.. so our code would scan the images to check for nudity and by using certain algorithms we could tell if the image contained any porn or not .. BUT WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO OPEN THE EMAIL AND READ IT!!!! (i hope you understand my point)

yeah .. i am in canada btw
