Is there a lot of emphasis on pedigree in the US socieity? Do people’s perception of you vary greatly on where you went to school or where your work?
Case in point: When Harriet Miers got nominated, a number of concerns were raised aganist her. One of them was her law school (I think it was SMU). Critics were baffled as to how someone can get nominated to the Supreme Court and not be a Ivy league grad.
It depends. The "higher" you are in society, the more it matters. The typical middle-class average american isnt too concerned about these things. It is something that has been on our minds though. We live in a very rich little town although our particular house is small and "regular". The boys have started pre-k and from what I see and hear from the other parents, I'm a bit concerned. I think they may be outcast a bit as they get older. I mean, when you look in the high school parking lot, you see lexus, mercedes etc. THese are the kids' cars! At a pre-k mothers meeting, the moms were talking about a seminar series given by the town's newcomer group called "Raising a child of Privelege". Also, the moms were talking about how the kids start getting competitive about clothes and toys in the age 4 class!!!! If my boys are wearing Gap and Old Navy while the other kids are all wearing Hilfiger and Banana Republic - well you get the idea. Kids can be mean.
...and here's another thing. My sons pre-K class has its big fundraiser next week. each parent has to prepare a dish that can feed 8 people and its a bigg dinner and auction where local stores have donated items to bid on. Each pre-k class also makes a "class project"...like toy box that each child painted on etc...and parents bid on these too.
The bidding goes so high that it could give Mother Teresa high blood pressure. I've seen the bidding on a "class project" go as high as 500 bux!!!!!!!! We're really wondering whether we can afford to live here in this pretty little (snobby rich) town!
bk, thats true (re: your "dirty" comment) in some places but really not in most places that I've seen and lived in during my whole life in NY. You have to know where to go and what to see. As far as rude people, yes it really seems that way although its more like life is just so crazy here that a person is so busy accounting for each moment that they have no moments left for strangers...sometimes there isnt even enough time for relatives and close friends lol! Its a crazy place, yeah make good money but its so very costly to live here that SO WHUT????!!! I dont know, sometimes it seems like a little self-sufficient farm in oshkosh would be just so lovely!
So, Michael Dell, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have "pedigrees"? Sorry, but three of the most wealthy people in the country, and by inference, three of the most powerful, have no pedigrees, and Dell, never graduated college. If ever there was a "meritocracy", it is the US. No Dhimmis here......
