Also, how do the above terms translate into desi clothes? eg my lawn suit stitched by my tailor, what would that classify as?

made to measure? custom?
Re: ELI5 - Difference between bespoke, custom, made-to-measure, couture and haute cou
bespoke = literally means custom -ordered; this is usually seen with high end designers who make the piece once you have paid up front, and they make it specifically for your body; so not something you pick off a rack; custom is pretty much the same thing; main difference between this and made to measure is that bespoke garments are typically hand-sewn and not made my machines; you will probably have to come in for a lot of fittings unlike the other types
made to measure = the patterns for the garment have already been made, but once the tailor has your measurements, they select the piece most close to your proportions and produce it, most often machines mass produce these, but some can be hand-sewn; not typically custom made as the patterns have already been made and you're just choosing something you like; this is **basically what we call tailoring nowadays **.. you see a pattern and material you like, you give your measurements to the tailor and voila it's done.
couture = means dress making in french and haute literally means high
haute couture = most commonly the term applied but basically be it couture or haute couture; you are dealing with high fashion, typically the stuff you see on the runways, super expensive, very high quality and custom-fitted stuff (bespoke pretty much fits here) - it would all be*** hand-sewn*, not mass-produced by machines like made to measure and deals with high quality fabrics and materials. In modern day France - haute couture is primarily the name they use for high end fashion designers/ design houses like say Chanel - they ***must meet a specific standard*.
