Electrical Engineers on this Forum

Hi guys,
I am lookin abt to start my senior year in couple of months Inshallah, My major is electrical engr (power) and i need to give my university a proposal abt senior design (senior project) I am going to be workin on next year. Those of u who r workin this feild would know what cud be a good project to work on.

All I am lookin for some idea’s.
Thanks all.

Re: Electrical Engineers on this Forum

Im an Electrical Engineer but my specialization is not 'Power'.

hey!
i'm going to be a senior this year, too and... yet i don't know wat i m gonna do :D.
and sorry, have absolutly no info about electrical engineering, but dont worry u'll do good , Inshallah. Browse the net, you'll find something worthy to work upon. wish u best of luck. :biggthumb.

Re: Electrical Engineers on this Forum

I'd say power is better than Telecomm or Computer Engineering majors. I guess I am 9 years too late lol :)

I&C Engineer here.
You are going to your final year studies this year , where you will have to go for Final Year Project.

Your field is Power , i think you have a very vast field.
My suggestion for you is that you should study and search for some UNIQUE power/Energy resources.

Like presently Sun , Water , Wind etc are conventional Sources for Power generation which are being used since the invention of Electricity.

You should go for such ideas which are not Much familiar or If you are genious those which others have not thought about.

DONOT CONVENTIONAL ELECTRICAL ENGINEER , PROVE YOURSELF TO BE INNOVATIVE.

best of luck.

contact mr skhan :D

Power....very good field...............the future is in "Solar Power"

vast potential..........seems you would probably not consider it because it is usually not centralized distribution system...........No high tension power grids etc...........

Good Luck!

Do some search on powering up a Rickshaw using a solar panel. Some seniors at my uni tried to do it but failed. I dont know what the reasons were though.

surface area for powering a solar powered rickshaw.....would be much larger than a 3 person rickshaw can have...........however a battery powered rickshaw with some solar recharging capabilities would be feasible I think!

May be not feasible and may give more weight to it.
You may noticed the Chemical Engg. could not solve the battery problem and its size.

See in some Cell phone the Heviest Item is its battery the rest of the parts are too small , even the Speaker now a days.

So for driving Rikshaw we will need Big batteries that will sufficient power.

Thanku

I was thinkin abt doin something Solar related.

yes thinkin abt it...

i was thinking of bicycle or Motor bike.

Anyway thanks everyone who responded
for those of who recommend something related to solar power... can u plz be little more specific. Thanku

From what I have learned over the internet…Solar Cells are getting close to 14% conversion efficiency, which makes them competitive in daylight hrs and closer to equator…with other power sources mainly becuase there is no loss in transmission like it is in centralized fossil fuel power plants..

Approximately Solar cells installed on a home’s rooftop can provide enough power during the day to fill the needs of one home and store excess power in battery bank…some systems even sell it back to the grid…

the investment needed seems to be around $38K to $45K initially…the solar cells life is 30 yrs plus in some cases…main expense is the replacement of batteries…that can be very expensive depending on what type batteries…

can you imagine if in Pakistan they switched to solar power…

No more ugly and illegally tapped power lines:

Kite flyers would Love that…

lol @ kite flyers wud love that… how abt make transmission underground…

Yes all new developments have that…but power plants always have towers carry the high tension distributuion cables.

If you check out what the power losses are in distribution system of the power grids…it is probably higher than 15% in USA

hmmm well i apologize for my innocence in the matter, but i dunt know which question did u answer in the above post :frowning:

If power generation for homes and small businesses is switched to Solar Power ..............then Solar Panels needed for each home will fit on the roof of the house.................

No need for getting power from central stations............Right!

so that would be an in-direct savings to the economy and environment......of ugly transmission lines and the expense of their installations.

Re: Electrical Engineers on this Forum

Actually now that i read both of ur posts i get what ur point was .... Probably it just didnt hit me that day.

There is another way Solar nergy is used to make electricity............

Sunlight is concentrated by parabolic mirrors to heat Sodium Metal and .....use it to make steam that runs the electric generators of a centralized Power Plant!

that is also an option for large plant.........again you need transmission lines!

well i will suggest not to follow solar power as everyone is doing that. The efficiency issues of the solar panel have long been taken care of, the days of only 10% efficiency rating had passed by us when we first got to know of it. Nowadays solar panels with 98% efficiency have been proven and will enter the market in the next couple of years, making the technology perfect.

Therefore if you are going towards researching new electricity producing resources, try to go for piezoelectric power production or other such advanced methods to produce or in the latter case recycle electric power energy...

Something i didnt know :)

I am not sure as of yet but i dont think am goin for solar related issues. I think the simplest project wud be just showing a new development and Underground transmission for the development. I have been workin on those with my Engineer and have some idea how it works.
