First off…salute you for cooking on electric. I cannot stand it, but nobody gives me gas anymore.
When you are cooking pilau, how long do you leave it on dum for? and also, do you switch it to another less hot hob just before you put the chaaval on dum?
I have only made boiled rice on electric before and it was a disaster, I don’t think how I think I can cook pilau on electric…
oh and do you put more water in cos its electic and will take longer?
Milly, the rice package usually says what the water to rice ratio should be. Some say double the amount, and others 1.5. The easiest way to make pulao is, once the broth boils, you add your rice and stir once. Turn the heat to medium-low, cover, and cook untouched for 20 minutes. That takes care of cooking and dum at the same time. My pulao turns out perfect every time. (I think I've just jinxed myself there.)
Cbeebies I know all that jazz, I have made pilau on gas hobs a million times, what i want to know is should it be adapted for an electic hob, as electric hobs take longer to cool down with the heat busisness and are generally just useless! I hate electric. :(
oh tell me about it...i hateeeeeeee electtric ....i just moved to new apt..and it has electric stove top, and i was cooking on gas for past 4 years..i am trying to get use with the electrice one, but i dont like it.
I think there is a difference…I am not a big fan of electrics but I have always ended up with it…
I once made pulao on gas stove at my mother’s place with the same amount of water and duration of dum as I would do on an electric stove and it turned out to be a mush…
When making pulao what I do is that when the broth comes to a boil I add the rice and let it cook on medium to high heat for a while…and stir it just once or twice…then when little liquid is left(sorry cant exactly tell how much because it took me quite a few attempts to figure that out so it all about ‘andaaza’ here) ,I cover the pot and turn the heat to the lowest setting and put on ‘dumm’ for about 20 mins…
It turns out well…
Milly I had gas too at my prev. apartment.. hated the electric one at my new place and struggled a lot with it. I am used to it now but what I do use as a tip is a Heat Diffuser..it is specially good for making rotis and rice.
I have number 6 from the top..it’s basic ..you can buy a better one if you like..
If you can’t find that around your place, just cut off the base of any tin can(like chickpeas tin or any bigger one) and you can use it as a substitute.
P.S: I like the electric oven way better than the gas one though
good thread...in jeddah i used to have electric oven and it took sometime to get used to of it...but anyhow electric pur meri roti hamaisha sookh jati thee:-/ chawal to ek dumA-one buntay thay aur sallun b.. anyway can someone tell me what is used mostly in canada? like eletcric or gas? which one is more economical in canada?
You can use both in Canada. It's just that in condos they don't let you use the gas ones for obv reasons.. in houses, you can install a gas one provided you hav a gas line (which you prolly do). Economical.. hmm wouldn't know that one. I've been used to the electric one for yearss so I'm pretty ok with it. My mom recently got a gas one and everytime I'm over and making smthng, I've to struggle with the flame setting.. :S
