I’d like to ask about the criteria of election of the first caliph.
if there was an election then who voted and was other sahabah-e-ikram participated or was the caliph nominated and then approved by the sahabah and the general population ?
Re: Election/Nomination of the First Khilifah
^ depends on which account you want to believe in ....
but fair to say first and fourth caliph were elected by the majority vote of the ansar and muhajireen ....but there was no offical shura ....offical shura only elected hz. Uthman
3 major muhajireen and ansar of aws and khazraj participated and some say banu aslam from the vicinity of medina
nomination and then approval by the population occured only with Umar(ra)
as he himself said
"someone better than me left a succesor and someone better than him did not "
Re: Election/Nomination of the First Khilifah
abu bakar (ra) was selected khalifa at time of crisis, but the selection was soon approved by the muslim masses as they gave bayt to him....
even Ali (ra) pledged allegiance to abu bakar (ra) when abu bakar (ra) went to him to ask why he had not come himself....
u can read the incident reported in sahih bukhari....
