ElBaradei warns of "Iraq nuclear emergency"

It has been reported that some “residents near Tuwaitha have exhibited symptoms of radiation sickness”. We know, with the current state of Iraq’s medical infrastructures - the chances of them receiving effective, prompt medical care at a public hospital is minimal to non-existent.
i am really not certain what more this country must go through.

ElBaradei Warns of Iraq Nuclear Emergency, Louis Charbonneau

The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency warned on Monday that a nuclear contamination emergency may be developing in Iraq and appealed to the United States to let his experts back into the country.

“I am deeply concerned by the almost daily reports of looting and destruction at nuclear sites,” International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei said in a statement. He said he was especially worried “about the potential radiological safety and security implications of nuclear and radiological materials that may no longer be under control.”

He said the reports the IAEA has received described uranium being emptied on the ground from containers then taken for domestic use and radioactive sources being stolen and removed from their shielding. “We have a moral responsibility to establish the facts without delay and take urgent remedial action,” ElBaradei said.

The U.N. agency has warned that stolen radioactive material could end up in the hands of terrorists who could use it to make dirty bombs, which combine radioactive material with a conventional explosive like dynamite to spread it over a wide area and is aimed more at causing panic than physical damage.

The IAEA chief first asked the United States on April 10 to secure nuclear material stored under U.N. seal at Iraq’s Tuwaitha nuclear research center and was promised by the United States that its military would keep the site secure.

One of the sources stored at Tuwaitha is caesium 137, a highly radioactive powder that would be especially dangerous in a dirty bomb. In 1987, a canister of caesium powder found in a Brazil junkyard exposed 249 people to radiation, killing four. **After numerous media reports that Tuwaitha and other nuclear facilities in Iraq had been looted, ElBaradei wrote again to the U.S. on April 29 requesting permission to send a mission to Iraq to investigate the looting reports.

The IAEA has received no response from Washington and said that the contamination in Iraq could lead to a “serious humanitarian situation.”

There have already been media reports that residents near Tuwaitha have exhibited symptoms of radiation sickness.**

There are more than 1,000 other radioactive sources in Iraq, many of which were stored at Tuwaitha.

"We didn't have the Constitution until 1787! How can you expect anything to happen overnight in Iraq??"

That's the line you have to deal with...
(if you wanna have fun with these people, just ask them to quote any part of it other than the first and sencond amendments :) They wouldn't know it exists if the TV pundit didn't tell them those words verbatim. But they're the ones that allow this wretched state to perpetuate.)

OK, sorry bout that last one.. I just came from checking out a Fox News fan forum...

Seriously, we knew long in advance every general scenario that could occur. The reason we did not start preparing long in advance for the expected chaos is because those stories would have damaged the political sales pitch and aborted the war. Because people did/do not want to tell the full truth as parts are unpleasant, people suffer.

:~) That's alright Spoon. Nothing to apologize for.

i can be reasonable at times. Even if the US admin. started to behave as though they were taking some genuine interest in this issue - a nice first step would be to contact the IAEA, authorize increased military protection around nuclear sites and factories, despatch medical personnel to Tuwaitha and other regions where reports of radiation sickness may be coming. Maybe they did not anticipate all the civil chaos that would ensue. The damage is done, and i am past laying the blame. The point that rankles me - is why aren't they doing anything **now
? For God's sake - if the admin views it from a pragmatic perspective even, it's for their own good. Doing nothing to secure Iraq's nuclear material (as Baradei has charged in this article) - entrenches the belief in even 'moderate' individuals like myself, that the US govt. really does not give a damn about any nonAmerican civilians. Surely that hurts their PR endeavours to improve the image of their country, particularly amongst Muslims ?

sigh i don't know.
After everything that has occurred in that wretched country, the last thing they need is another generation of children being deformed by nuclear contamination.

You would think from their statements that the United States would be seriously concerned by this sort of thing, but it seems not to be. Very puzzling.
