**Pakistani Teen Recovering After Being Shot **

KARACHI, Pakistan - Suffering from five bullet wounds, Noor Jehan calls out in pain for her mother. The 14-year old Pakistani girl is recuperating slowly in a hospital from a brutal attack allegedly carried out by two male cousins to avenge a rebuffed marriage proposal.
But neither her mom nor her other relatives could be found — all apparently scared into hiding by the attempted “honor killing.” The only people close enough to hear her cries are the four police officers guarding her room.
Honor killings claim hundreds of lives each year in this conservative Muslim nation. The targets include wives accused of having affairs, young women who refuse a marriage partner, and brides and grooms marrying without family consent. The crimes are usually committed by male relatives and most go unpunished.
Jehan’s case is particularly gruesome.
Police said she crawled out of a ditch after being shot four times in the legs and once in the abdomen in the eastern outskirts of Karachi on April 18. A passer-by called police.
“They shot me with several bullets … I fell in the ditch and they drove away,” Jehan said from her bed in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center. “They thought I was dead but … somehow I got the courage to come out of that ditch.”

This is a quite common in Pakistan, worse things happen like disfiguring with acid etc.
However, the mistake here is that people equate such crimes to a particular mindset among Pakis towards women, i would rather say that this coz of poor law & order situation.
Anyone can get away with any crime in Pakistan. And after getting away with one they carry on doing more.
Apparently, the internet sites carry mostly crimes against women or crimes of sensational nature. But you do not know, how common it is for young boys shot dead during motor cycle snatching.
Shot for overtaking another car. Shopkeepers shot for asking money from customer. etc.
These crimes will not/will never stop by propagating some enlightened moderation, they will only stop when people know they will be punished for their actions.
^ oh bhai woh mai 3 baar check kar chuka hoon, article poora parha karo... the decline is MAINLY because of (LARGE number of) displaced persons due to earthquake and our military operations in Baluchistan + NWFP.... this particular issue got nothing to do with "ranking". Such issues have been occuring in past as well, its just that journalists are getting better paid to cover these incidents now.
Such killings and acts happen across the world in each nation. Dejected men can't take a no from women... typical Mcp (Male Chauvenist Pigs), some societies has more of these some less of them..
The mute point is whether Noor Jehan will get justice or not........
There was a woman in my class last semester who spoke about what happens in her country (Kazakhstan I think).. you think desis have it bad, grlz there r literaly kidnapped on their wedding day.. sometimes its an “act” other times its true fright.. :no:
