Eight infants reported dead at Vehari hospital – The Express Tribune

VEHARI: Eight infants have died at the District Headquarter Hospital Vehari under dubious circumstances , Express News reported on Tuesday.

Malfunctioning ventilators and a lack of oxygen supply at the children’s complex of the hospital are being reported as the cause of deaths by hospital staff. However, family members of the deceased infants have claimed otherwise, pointing towards medical negligence.

Protesting against doctors and paramedical staff outside the hospital, family members of the deceased said the deaths were caused by the carelessness of paramedical staff, not faulty ventilators. They went on to allege that the hospital’s staff were on their cellphones all night, leaving patients unattended for hours.

Further, Dr Maqbool Ahmed, in charge of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), has claimed that only four children have died due to malfunctioning ventilators. It has also been reported that Dr Ahmed and the nurse on duty, Sumaira Johnson, have been suspended following the incident.

Meanwhile, District Coordination Officer Jawad Akram has said that the children died due to lack of oxygen. An inquiry committee has been formed, according to Medical Superintendent Doctor Muhammed Ashraf, to investigate the matter. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has requested a full report on it by this evening.

Re: Eight infants reported dead at Vehari hospital

Let the inquiry finish and see if they had identified 'failing' equipment in past or did they kept 'work-around' to avoid 'expenses'.

Re: Eight infants reported dead at Vehari hospital

In Pakistan, perhaps NO one
In other democracies, perhaps health minister

Re: Eight infants reported dead at Vehari hospital

not failing equipment...the cylinders ran out of Oxygen...it was that simple! isn't that the height of negligence? some healthcare workers were even found sleeping on the job by the parents of those kids. isn't that a criminal negligence?

There is definitely negligence but ventilators AND lack of oxygen supply are also there, where did you read that the healthcare staff was sleeping? Anyways, the inquiry must be done from non-hospital officials.

Re: Eight infants reported dead at Vehari hospital

the reporter and the anchor on Dunya News mentioned this fact on several occasions. the parents who were interviewed said/claimed that.

oxygen cylinders running out of oxygen in this case were one of the major reasons. the admin said that they ordered the cylinders but the order was caught in the bureaucracy and 'red tape'. they simply had no money as well. only 21% of the budget amount was released by the government since April 1st of this year. :(

Re: Eight infants reported dead at Vehari hospital

In that case govt gets blamed as well.

Re: Eight infants reported dead at Vehari hospital

Omg, that's horrendous. We just needed to take a relative to the hospital. There were torn sheets in the private rooms, rats, water in the room, nurses refusing to change drips, needed to buy everything for operation. It was crazy how much money we were laying out for nothing. Can't imagine how much non local people with little money and support at the hospital were surviving.
