Diwali is more of a North festival. Southies do celebrate it - more of axfamily thing.
For Navestri - 9 nights mother would invite ladies and be invited by other ladies.
Most our function no formal invitation. We make sweets distribute to close neighbors and family - and give sweets to any guests. Family or friends just show up unannounced.
Maybe I. Upper middle class families they did formal invitations etc.
