Re: Egyptian grand mufti says Muslims can convert to other religions
The scholars who keep declaring that apostacy is punishable by death fail to realize that no one can be forced to believe something. Belief comes from the heart not actions or verbal declarations. My personal opinion has always been apostacy solely is not subject to capital punishment. If it is done with intent to harm muslims then it has a totally different dimension. Apostacy is a crime against Allah SWT. Apostacy accompanied with treason is a crime to harm muslims and subject to judicial law prevelant in the muslim society. What more could you do to an apostate by killing him when he has already eternally condemned himself/herself. In fact you are limiting his chances of ever re-thinking his decision and come back to Islam. Threatening to kill him will not change his heart but will corrupt it more with malice for muslims. Hudood are applicable when the society needs to be saved from the harm of a person. Remember whether Islam stays or perishes on this earth it does not harm Allah SWT. Islam is for our benefit. If you don't want to benefit from it then its your problem. If you want to harm us then it is our problem.
