Three Britons have been jailed for five years in Egypt after being convicted of attempting to revive a banned Islamic group.
The men were first arrested with 23 others in April 2002 and accused of attempting to reform Hizb-ut-Tahrir - or the Islamic Liberation Party.
All were convicted of plotting “to revolt against the regimes in place across Arab and Islamic states under the pretext they are infidels”.
The Britons, Maajid Nawaz, 26, from Essex, Reza Pankhurst, 28, from London and Ian Nisbet, 29, also from London, had denied the charges.
‘Tortured’
They claimed they were tortured into signing confessions which they had not been allowed to read prior to trial.
Pankhurst told the press on the first day of the trial that he had been stripped naked, tortured with electricity and threatened with sexual abuse.
Lawyers for the defendants had argued the group was only studying the ideologies of the Islamic Liberation Party and not recruiting others to follow its thinking.
After hearing the verdict all three men shouted “God is great! Thanks be to God!”
‘Oppressors’
Nisbett added: “Thank God for everything. We hope God is going to award us in the afterlife. We tried to change oppression in Egypt. Now, they are admitting that they are oppressors.”
The men’s relatives say they have been set up and accuse the British Government of failing to offer the men any help.
Nisbett’s father, Alistair said : "It would be nice to think the British Government would do something but they have done precious little so far.
“The Prime Minister kept this at arm’s length when he met the Egyptian President at the New Year.”
The Foreign Office said it would wait for the Egyptian court to formalise its verdict before deciding what steps to take next.
Comment:
More muslims imprisoned for calling for the truth and American criticism is conspicuous by its absence, maybe its because Egypt is an ally on the war against political Islam. No matter how many thousands of muslims the corrupt muslim rulers imprison they cannot stop the Islamic revival which is gaining strength day by day.
