Eggs and Mirchain

We’ve seen/heard people run 7 red chillies round a person’s head and burn them to ward of the evil eye. Sometimes an egg or a live chicken or money might even be used.

My question is that are there any hadith references for such practices? The reason I ask is because even in religious programs that suggest wazifas…they will mention things like the use of chillies to get rid of nazar. And it makes me wonder why this is done when we are advised to recite surahs/tasbeeh for protection from the eye and other dangers. I’ve also read that if one knows who gave the evil eye..then that person is to perform wuzu qnd the victim bathes with the wuzu water. In another culture…eggs are also used to remove the evil eye; what is the significance of these ingredients? :hmmm:

Re: Eggs and Mirchain

Never heard any islamic reference to the sabzi treatment....

All i 'heard' is the ayat-ul-kursi and Qul's.....

Re: Eggs and Mirchain

Peace redvelvet,

There is no such hadith nor mentioned in Holy Qur'an about usage of "Mirchain, eggs and many other such things". Usage of Mirchain or eggs merged from some experiments like if one hang empty shells into kitchen or at any place in own house then its scare off lizards and they won't enter in that place or house. Similar to that red chillies effects on ants and ants won't enter that place house.

I think some may have taken above experiments as to ward-off evils eyes, etc., but its not has anything to do with religion.

Re: Eggs and Mirchain

Didn't have chillis in those days. They are from South America and weren't seen in India till the Europeans tools them over in about 1500AD.

Re: Eggs and Mirchain

I think it's all BS voodoo jadoo type stuff that was being practiced by people on the subcontinent that somehow got mixed into the practice of Islam, and now people cannot differentiate the two.

As this is a money making scheme for many people, many "maulvis" will not come out and totally disown this stuff as they should.

Re: Eggs and Mirchain

^ Yea. This was mainly done in Eastern India, I’m going to assume by Hindus. It’s just something we adopted before the partition, like many rasms which aren’t Islamic.
