Here is some information I found. First this picture won the pulitzer prize and yes the photographer did commit suicide not because he didn’t fed the girl, even though he helped the girl but people bashed him so much and he was already a depressed man.

Friends said Mr. Carter was a man of tumultuous emotions, which brought passion to his work but also drove him to extremes of elation and depression. He often told friends if he had not become a photographer he would have been a race car driver, because he enjoyed living close to the edge.
Last year, saying he needed a break from South Africa’s turmoil, he paid his own way to the southern Sudan to photograph a civil war and famine he felt the world was overlooking.
His picture of an emaciated girl collapsing on the way to a feeding center, as a plump vulture lurked in the background, was published first in The New York Times and The Mail & Guardian, a Johannesburg weekly. Later it was displayed in many other publications as a metaphor for Africa’s despair.
The reaction to the picture was so strong that The Times published an unusual editors’ note on the fate of the girl. Mr. Carter said she resumed her trek to the feeding center. He chased away the vulture.
The Horror of the Work
Afterward, he told an interviewer in April, he sat under a tree for a long time, “smoking cigarettes and crying.”
“Kevin always carried around the horror of the work he did,” his father, Jimmy Carter, told the South African Press Association tonight.
Mr. Carter was born in Johannesburg on Sept. 13, 1960. He began as a freelance photographer for The Sunday Express, a tabloid that is now defunct, and moved in 1984 to South Africa’s largest daily newspaper, The Star, in Johannesburg.
He worked as chief photographer at The Sunday Tribune and started the photo department at The Daily Mail in 1990. He remained with The Mail when it reverted to a weekly format, and last year began full-time work for Reuters.
Mr. Carter is survived by his parents, a 6-year-old daughter, and two sisters.

this photograph showing a starving sudanese child being stalked by a vulture won kevin carterthe 1994 pulitzer prize for feature photography. the photograph, raised a lot of money for relief agencies. the photographer, on the other hand, came under very heavy criticism by the public and agencies alike. in a time and place where 20 people die of starvation every hour, could the photographer have done something to save the child?
the photograph was taken in march 1993 near the village of ayod in sudan. according to time, the photographer heard a whimpering which attracted him to the toddler who was on her way to a feeding center. she had stopped to rest when a vulture landed nearby. the photographer had waited 20 minutes for the vulture to spread its wings, but it did not. so he shot this photo before chasing the vulture away.
this photo was first published in the new york times on 26 march 1993.
the criticism which falls photographers is obvious. our commitment to our job versus our moral obligations. is some way or another, we are sometimes faced with the dilemma of helping or photographing.
according to the national association of press photographers (america), it is a good idea to think about these issues in advance because when the hour comes, it will come suddenly and we will be asked to make a choice quickly. maybe it won’t be famine. but it might be an accident or a fire. would you be the one who captured the explosion of the fire, or be the one to rescue the victims of the accident?
i personally believe in moral obligations. but that is not for you to agree with, but for you to make up your own mind. in defense of kevin carter, the photo he took did raise public consciousness of the famine conditions of sudan. but that is his contribution to the world. the weight and responsibility towards what he owed the child would be something he carried in his soul for he rest of his life.
several months after receiving the pulitzer for the photo that made the world weep, kevin carter returned to africa, where he committed suicide.
at what point do you put the camera down and help? at what point does your humanity become more important than your journalism?

Thank goodness my memory still works.

It’s a funny twist on the perception of Muslim women in general.

Shadi Ghadirian is one of my favorite photographers, besides her humor, she brings a very real issue in the Muslim world in the form of art. This was her “Like Everyday Series” that she photographed and released after her divorce. She’s showing the typical routine (in small villages in Iran) and how her life changed after marriage.
