Frankly what happened today, like chhitroul of lawyers, and ordinary people and ransacking of GEO by police are by no means anything close to what happened in the past.
Much worse things have happened in Pakistan, but were not covered LIVE on television.
The protests of PPP during Zia’a regime were bigger and more widespraed and more brutally crushed.
During BB’s time, 4 people were killed in few hours when Qazi did his Dharna in Islamabad.
All copies of major newspapers like Jang have been burned by MQM in Karachi coz they did not like the reporting.
None, of all these turned up so much heat as todays events, coz these were not covered LIVE, like today, when three channels, AAJ, GEO and ARY showed everything on TV.
Even the Sheikh Rasheed today was forced to say on GEO is that media is far ahead of other insitution in Pakistan (what he meant was that they never thought all what gov was doing will be seen all over the world) and blamed the unelected “think tank” for giving ill-advice to President.
Re: Effects of Live Coverage
unelected thinktank?
Ya, from what I have heard this isnt close to what happend in the past. But these are good signs as government feels the heat in no time and realizes its mistake. They 'll ultimately become cautious of what they do, for now nothing is hidden from the media. I won't say it generates a sense of respnsibility but it does create some checks and balances withing the system.
However, I dont know how to draw the line between sensationalism and just reporting. Was media being responsible or did it go overboard?
Re: Effects of Live Coverage
I don't think media went overboard, they just did a live coverage of events that everybody wanted to know about. All eyes were on todays hearing, they should have been there.

imagine what the world would have seen if the operations in karachi in the 90's were covered live...
anyone who saw those could never forget the brutality.
