Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

so…

there are many who are like..addicted to internet…browsing forums, facebook, chat etc etc… such people seem to immerse themselves in virtual reality…

while they are doing all of that… i wonder if the kids are being neglected??
if mom is spending all her time on computer…and only coming off it when its like..something really really urgent…what message does it give to the children??

and moreover…how would u discipline your kids…lets say…when they start using it, getting addicted to video games or other stuff…??

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

same as mothers who work full time, or have an active social life or were/are addicted to dramas and soap operas....some knew how to strike that balance and some didn't. internet is no different

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

I have to make a conscious effort not to stay glued to the screen. Kids notice when your attention is divided. They may be fed and clean and all that, but they know they aren't getting what they need from their parents.

I didn't realize how hooked I was to tv/computer until I had my daughter. I think this is an issue that past generations have not had to deal with, at least not to this extent, and I do worry how it will affect the development of children if us parents are disciplined and conscious enough.

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

my brat turns the switch off if i'm diverted to the laptop for over 5 mins. Kids these days!!

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

i sometimes get carried away online.. but i manage to get back to reality shut off my laptop and focus on my kids and house.

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

It's all about priorities. I know moms who spend afternoons on excessive phonecalls with friends, watching dramas or lunch get togethers, or moms who've taken on extra workload on top of a demanding career... whenever there is a change in priorities, someone could suffer.

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

so.....is internet addiction comparable to.....lets say working more,or visiting people etc??
i think it would be more harmful if the child would see his mother sitting nearby and not giving a damn about him???

and somehow.....last part of my orignial post seems to be invisible :(

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

Too much time in some activity means the time that could have been spent in a productive activity instead. So I would definitely be taking away from time to help my kids with homework, play, or anything constructive, not necessarily with the kids. Kids learn from example not words alone. So if I want my kids to indulge in healthy activities and learn how to prioritize, I have to do it first.

Re: Effect of parents' internet addiction on kids...

same with me. i try not to spend too much time on my blackberry either when i'm with him. they pick up on these things pretty quickly and i don't ever want him to feel that his papa or i are too slow to respond to his needs because we're busy checking messages.
