My parents actually moved to a university town (as opposed to the nearby metropolitan area where a lot of desis immigrate) because there were two universities and one college in the same area. We weren’t pressured to stay at home but given that there were great schools nearby it didn’t make sense to take on a lot of debt to move away.
My dad did encourage me to apply for internships away from home so that I would learn to live on my own. I think it’s a good experience for everyone.
