Did you go to a different city or country for your education? If you did, why did you go? Was it parental pressure, or you always wanted to go or was it the university.
Education
In most cases I know my family and friends who have gone away for school it is because either they had their sights sets on a specific school, certain opportunities were more greater in different areas for their field of study, the willingness to have their own independence. If I could have afforded it, I too would of gone but it came down to money. Are you thinking of moving away for school?
Re: Education
I wanted to go just three hours away and the answer was a big fat NO.

what?
Re: Education
i went to another city for my grade 10 and university because my parents lived in a village where there were no GOOd schools! :) it was more of a need than my choice...i had NO other option!
Re: Education

I think its great to go out of state for education and travel and I thought it was so interesting that the OP suggested parents might put pressure on their kids to actually GO somewhere else.
It was the exact opposite for me...all the pressure was to stay as close as possible.

My parents actually moved to a university town (as opposed to the nearby metropolitan area where a lot of desis immigrate) because there were two universities and one college in the same area. We weren't pressured to stay at home but given that there were great schools nearby it didn't make sense to take on a lot of debt to move away.
My dad did encourage me to apply for internships away from home so that I would learn to live on my own. I think it's a good experience for everyone.

Same here I had to stay within a 30 mile radius of my home for school. I wasn't really ambitious, and don't think I still am so the pressure to stay close to home was well taken. The school I went to was good though it ranks top 50 in the United States.
Re: Education
I stayed at home although I did move out with friends which was stupid as my home is about 10 miles away from campus. Lol.
I live near a very good uni so need to move far. Although I would for a masters programme.
Re: Education
I wanted to go away for school, but I wasn't allowed to and had to stay home because of family. Then my dad told me I could get my credits transferred to a different school, half way through school. That didn't pan out either, again because the family needed me. Hope I can go some place cool for my Masters.
Fingers crossed
Re: Education
I stayed with my parents during my entire education. But that's because I had a very good university available in town and got admitted to that. If that had not been the case, I would have moved out.
Re: Education
I went wherever education was easiest, I did my BA honours in UK but gonna do my Masters in (hopefully a free and independant) Scotland and my PHD in Norway. Just becuase its easier to study my chosen subjects outside of England. :D
