What does it mean to you?
How much value do you have for this concept?
Mind you, I’m talking about education in the sense of worldly education. All forms of education EXCEPT religion. This is not a religious topic.

Re: Education
It's overated.
Re: Education
i think there is a big difference between the educated and uneducated, and personally i would like to be educated
Re: Education
I think education is HUGELY important. No question about it. I dont even know where to start when talking about the positive aspects of it but by far the most important thing is that education can/could bring about a much more peaceful world. I cannot think of one positive aspect of remaining uneducated (by definition that means "ignorant" and ignorance has caused so many troubles on this planet. But you've asked a very open-ended question....is there anything more specific you'd like to get at here?
You asked what does it mean to YOU....well to me, it means that I was able to go out in the world, earn a very good living in a very male-oriented profession and no matter what happens in my life, I know that if I need to, I'd be able to put good food on the table for my kids. And be able to give them some extras too. I can absolutely and sincerely have a coherent and understanding conversation with my husband about his work, his projects, his successes, his frustrations, I can know exactly what his day is like. These things are simple though in comparison to education in the sense of the younger ones....so much more important. Every 12 year old should know that the earth is round. That airplanes do NOT need to flap their wings. That there are different cultures and religions and that's OK. They need to be able to read and write. ok i'll get off the soapbox now. I think you get my point....

I think you mean there's no positive aspect of remaining uneducated? I know many would disagree, especially when it came to educating women.
I think education in all forms is important, including religious. Education simply isn't going to college or school and studynig from books, it comes in many forms, but if someone does have the means to pursue formal education, the opportunity should not be passed up.
Re: Education
lol, my GOODNESS was THAT ever an "oops"!!!
Re: Education
Education and seeking knowledge is my religious obligation.:)
Re: Education
education ( ..formal, informal, continuing, structured, unstructured, worldly, religious, etc etc etc) .. is critical. learning should never stop.
For me education gives me the ability to be more aware of our world, people, customs, religions, to appreciate this life and this world even more, to live a more productive and fulfilling life, to help me pursue interests in life, to always have something else and something new to learn about to keep life exciting and interesting.

oye..cheeen jao.
Re: Education
i think formal education is great if you have the time and means to pursue it. it can aid in personal development and may also help you get a better job. but it doesnt make you a superior human being. in alot of conversations a persons formal education comes up to calculate their superiority.
a formal education can be useful though...it can help u meet like minded individuals and friends and even spouses at educational institutions. it can take you to different countries and force you to study subjects you never knew you would find interesting.
education of basic rights, laws and procedures IS essential and everyone should have access to this sort of education.

surely that is not the only advantage of formal education, it helps you become a more useful member of society and help usher in change..new techniques, technology, you would not have scholars, scientists, physicians, .. engineers and technologists coming up with things to help folks, business folks would not be coming up with processes and approaches to make a science of supply chain management or customer relationship management, of financing and funding options etc etc etc.
education of basic rights, laws and procedures IS essential and everyone should have access to this sort of education.
dont forget health and hygiene.

Worldy education is also based on knowledge provided by Allah:swt: and He’s commanded to gain such knowledge in many places in Quran.
Re: Education
thank you AQ for the reminder to all
I find it amusing sometimes when ppl make it an issue of deeni ‘or’ dunyawi education, and I am thinking “geezer…are they mutually exclusive”
Re: Education
Then why is it that Pakistanis, for the most part, are uneduated, or at least, have a very minimal level of education?
Re: Education
There is no real public education system over there. Its up to the parents to send their kids to school - or NOT. And to pay for it. And it seems so very corrupt that parents really need to bribe their way into the better schools. WHen they are rich enough that is. The vast majority of the population over there is much more concerned about feeding the family, yeah? I met the most adorable 12 year old servant who was making more money in a month than his dad made in a year on his farm. Poor kid declined a free education...but didnt beleive us that the earth is round, that New York is further than - gosh - Islamabad, and I could go on. You get the idea....who wants to go to school when food on the table is so much more important? And what-the-heck, the system is so corrupt anyway that why bother.
Re: Education
mama but desis can only sit and talk about the divide between rich and poor while paying pennies to their domestic servants. They may brag that oh we have so many servants and life here is so good because of that versus you folks in US who have to do everything etc..
I am like dude...its rather rich coming from you about divide between rich and poor while you have not bothered to pay your domestic servants a living wage anyways
The interestign thing is that I have spoken about this issue with many groups and by and large no one gives a damn.
Re: Education
for me education is not about how much QUALIFIED one is ? or number of degrees or diploma one owe's ?? cuzz this criteria varies person to person , , it vastly depends on one's resourses , affordability and even on the kindda brought up one got from his family ......................... for me education is how much or what have one learned in all those years of academics , yr character , personality , yr +ve approach towards life and living, the exact sence of what's right what's wrong , the instant ability of decision making , and the will power to face the odds and crisis in life , so on & on ................ a highly qualified person from a extremely rich background who lack such abilities and needs to be spoon fed by others could never attract me , on the other hand a high school graduate who is smart ,self made , have strong character + will power but couldn't afford to continue his education is winner for me ................... and PCG for uneducated people in pakistan i must say they have 2 kinds , the one's whor not at all educated -or- barely get's basic eduation and the one's who r all educated but ignorant .
