It sounds like your secondary education focussed too much on memorization and regurgitation of historical facts rather than discussion and discourse of history per say. Unfortunately, you’re not alone in this experience… it’s very typical, not just in India & Pakistan, but even secondary schools here in Canada.
That being said, I have special respect for people who’ve studied history the right way. Two of my close friends were history majors in University and they’ve gone on to professions in medicine and law. Another colleague who pursued a general liberal arts degree is currently a head honcho in the telecom sector. In addition to developing an understanding of how we as individuals are the sum of a vast range of past experiences, history leads to greater personal insight about cultural, political, social and economic factors that have shaped our world. If done right, studying history, or other liberal arts subjects for that matter, is a great way to develop skills that are universal and cross-applicable in a variety of domains. You learn good habits of thought – how to analyze ideas and data, and how to develop synthesized interpretations of facts and narratives. You are also well trained in expressing yourself well – both verbally and in writing, and this is helpful regardless of your desired professional career path.
The points mentioned above are just a few examples of why a University education in Liberal Arts is important and is quite well regarded in the West. My own undergraduate and graduate training is in the technical and business domains but often wish I had a more well-rounded educational background rather than a confined perspective rationed and imposed by the academic programs I undertook.
