Re: Education in Pakistan [split: Austrian company pledges extra $150 million]
Well, one thing you guys are forgetting is that the best Universities in Pakistan were opened up long 'BEFORE' Musharraf. GIKi, NUST, LUMS, FAST, IBA were well before Musharrafs times. In case of GIKi, NUST, IBA they were doing much better before musharraf though Im not blaming him for their downfall, just pointing out how some people are painting a picture of 'musharraf gave birth to education in pakistan, and no one else has anything to offer'
As for these 50,000 colleges emerging now, none of them are really upto par with the ones I mentioned above. They are only there because its a lucrative business, open up a college, use your contacts in UGC to get it affiliated, and charge a hefty fee. You cant say it will take time for these univs to get onto the top, as GIKi in its infancy was ranked 4th best in Asia, NUST 20th, but downhill after that.
The only thing that this Govt did right, thanks to Atta was the HEC scholarships; though not completely utilized properly, it will prove be a great move.
its actully the oppersite that has happened.
GIKI, NUST, LUMS, FAST, IBA were all only excellent pakistani standards, they were laughted at internationaly, today these unis have had major make overs, lums has been expanded, new buildings and state of the art facilities made, NUST was in a terrible state before mush came, their buildings were scattered all over the country, and now its also getting a huge shake up, look at its new campus, its a massive city itself, GIKI was also deterating day by day and was only alive due to the high profile nuclear scientist who went to study there and there work on the nuclear programe, the UN even banned companies in europe and usa in giving jobs to GIKI students, its was going down untill mush came along. well your right these unis existed before mush came, but it was now that they have been made to international standards.
no one is saying mush has given birth to pakistani education, but its not a hidden fact, he has taken education miles away from where it was before he came, and deserves the creadit for it.
as for saying the new ones arnt on par with the old ones, what you actully on, was that saracasm, i hope so. im sure you know it takes years for a uni to get itself established and build a name for itself, before it takes over the gikis and the lums.
and which ranking are you talking about, must be making it up or post the sources please, cause im sure no pak university was in the top 50 before 2000.
im sure it was lums to be the first uni from pak to break into the international rankings.
