Much of what the public knows about America’s most celebrated inventor is riddled with misconceptions. Among other things, the shrewed businessman Thomas Alva Edison, did not invent the light bulb. Following is a list of inventions that are often attributed to Edison, but were in fact not his making.
The Electric Bulb or Incandescent Lamp
The Electric Chair
The Movie Camera
The Power Generator
X-Ray Photographs (fluoroscope)
The Storage Battery
The Record Player
Wax Paper
The Telegraph
So all can I say about Edison: Boht achay! Chori ooper se seena zori :hehe:
Edison is infamous for running a sweatshop of sorts, hiring would-be inventors and then stealing their work. He was also not averse to using underhanded methods to discredit others, the primary example being the War of Currents. The quintessential American ;).
Edison had a research firm, where he employed researchers/scientists and they were paid a salary, whether their research netted something or not they got paid, but the company had the ownership of the idea. The people employed by him understood what they were signing on to, and may have had misgivings later on but through employment they got the funds, freedom and support to try out stuff. I have no reason to be a fanboy or critic of edison, but wanted to share a counterpoint.
When I learned about DNA in an undergraduate genetics class, my instructor paced back and forth on the podium, telling the story of James Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins – the men who won the Nobel Prize for discovering the structure of DNA in 1953.But there was a catch, she told us. Those men didn’t discover DNA’s structure at all; they stole it from a King’s College scientist named Rosalind Franklin, then let her die in obscurity, never giving her the credit due for her work.
No doubts Edison is the great scientist and it opens the door of new inventions by inventing electric bulb which enlightens the future of entire world. As Thomas Edison invents various things such as phonograph, kinetoscope, Vitascope, movie camera and much more things.
