ISLAMABAD: In a move long overdue, the government of Pakistan finally submitted a formal nomination for renowned social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi to the 2012 Nobel committee.
The nomination is in partnership with “Edhi for Nobel Peace Prize” — a campaign launched by SOC Films and Peter Oborne, the chief political commentator of the Daily Telegraph.
The initiative includes an online petition and a letter writing campaign aimed at galvanizing support and awareness for Edhi’s nomination.
To date, over 75,000 signatures have been amassed and hundreds of letters sent to individuals who are in a position to submit nominations to the Nobel Committee.
Edhi, 83, is a household name in Pakistan, known for his humanitarianism and charity work.
Peter Oborne, who is credited with introducing Edhi and his charity to the mainstream western audience, described how he realised that Edhi was a “saint” after seeing him at work in Karachi and speaking to him about various issues which opened the British journalist’s eyes to a whole new look into Pakistan and how a single man has established a functioning welfare system for the most disadvantaged through his ambulance service and orphanages.
“I realised I was with a saint. I had never met a saint before and I don’t expect to meet a saint again. I was humbled by his dedication and his humility and the way he was saving lives. I realised this was someone remarkable,” Oborne said.
He said Edhi is recognised hugely in Pakistan but not internationally and it’s important his work should be highlighted and he should be given the Nobel Peace Prize.
Belated but a right move to get a highly-deserving social worker an award that will eventually increase its own worth which was lowered by recipients such as the serving US president.
I have seen him working like this since I was a in my early teens (late 80s). What struck me then was that he used to bath dead bodies jis jo apney ghar waley bath dainey per tayyar nahi hotey theey. (mostly terrorism victims in karachi)
Oi...holi bolo....president Dr. Rahman malik aur Dr Awan ko na nominate karr daay
After all, Daaktar Rehman said that if Balochi naujawaans lay down their arms and come down from the mountains (?), the government will negotiate peace with them. :)
[Funny because they have tried that trick a few times already.]
This is great news and about time he is appreciated for the excellent job he is doing. If Obama can win the Nobel prize for doing nothing this man deserves 10.
Never gonna happen. Nobel prize for a Muslim? NEVA!
Abdus Salam is Pakistani but not Muslim. As for Ahmed Zewali I was wrong. Seems one Muslim did get it.
you are pretty clueless, dude...lost in a sea of islam-centric conspiracy theories.
in the last decade alone, muhammad yunus, shireen ebadi, mohamed el-baradei, and some yemeni journalist won one. before that, sadat and arafat both won one. how many is that?
