EDGE WON! EDGE WON! EDGE WON THE TITLE! By God Almighty, Edge is the NEW WWE Champion

I jumped up and down, and down and up, and up and down, so bad after the title changed hands on RAW. I mean, RAW? You are telling me Edge WON? When exactly was the last time the WWE Title changed hands? Let’s take a look at the factsheet:

  • 9/18/03: Brock Lesnar defeats Kurt Angle in a 60 minute Iron Man match on Smackdown, marking the last time the WWE Heavyweight Title changes hands on a regularly televised match. One of the single best matches of Angle/Lesnar feud, including their title match at Wrestlemania. Can any living being on this earth ever forget that botched Shooting Star Press? The guy landed straight on his face. 290 pounds coming right down on Angle’s neck, and he moved an inch. I still have fears watching that match, over and over again. Simply one of the top ten Wrestlemania matches of all-time, not in terms of actual wrestling alone, but the storyline that was attached with it, the entertainment that was provided throughout and the picture-perfect execution style.

  • The record for most WWE Championships held by a single person is seven, held by The Rock. Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin have six reigns, Bret Hart and Triple H have five, The Undertaker and Kurt Angle have four, and Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, and Brock Lesnar have three.

  • 10/8/01: Steve Austin defeats Kurt Angle to recapture the WWF Heavyweight Title, marking the last time the Heavyweight title changes hands in a match on Raw.

Edge was already rumored very heavily in the news spoilers to start a long program with Cena that will most likely last throughout summer, with DX and McMahon feud culminating at Summerslam and Orton/Triple H starting a fresh feud thereafter. So how does Edge winning the title affect your life? Boy, oh boy. That night when Edge and Cena first went head-to-head in the January version of RAW right after New Years Revolution, the quarter-hour ratings peaked at an all-time high. 4.5, to be precise. Mind-blowing, just incredible. I admit, last week I was putting my money heavily on the title change but it didn’t happen. This week, just towards the end, as Cena gave his finisher to Lita, I thought to myself, Oh God, is this the night? Is this…Is tonight the night Edge is going to be champion? Low and behold, the next 120 seconds has shaped to what is now known - A rated ‘R’ superstar is brought back into the civilization of life.

Thankfully, Cena is not winning the title back anytime soon. I can’t wait for the ratings breakdown for this week. With Edge cutting his promo in the first hour followed by numerous DX skits and the near-perfect ending, my night is “complete.”

A new hero is raised on the horizon. Summerslam, here we come.
