Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

The Economist magazine has accused India of hostile censorship after being forced by the country’s authorities to cover up **a map in its latest edition](http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/05/indian_pakistani_and_chinese_border_disputes). **

**India says the map, which depicts the disputed area of Kashmir, is incorrect because it shows the region as divided between Pakistan, India and China. **

**Kashmir is claimed by both India and Pakistan in its entirety but has been divided since 1948. **

**It has been the cause of two wars between them. **

**Nearly 30,000 copies of the latest edition of The Economist are being distributed in India with a blank white sticker placed over a map of Kashmir. **

**The map was to be used to illustrate a cover story on the border between India and Pakistan which it describes as the world’s “most dangerous”. **

**Indian officials forced the magazine to take the step because the map did not show all of Kashmir as being part of India. **

**The Economist says it was merely reflecting the current effective border, adding that India is more intolerant on the issue than either Pakistan or China. **

**Indian readers, it said, could face the political reality of the situation on the ground unlike its government. **

The authorities in India routinely target the international media, including the BBC, on the issue of Kashmir’s borders if the media do not reflect India’s claims

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

So the paper was forced to put stickers to hide the map?

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

seems like tht!!

fully agree with this part!!

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

Sheesh… That is a lot of stickers to paste in the middle of the magazine. Hope they have machines for that.

Some intersting comments on this article:

Manav Bhardwaj

Hey people at the Economist, yes India is more intolerant on the issue than either
Pakistan or China, and why it shouldn’t be?Its India whose territory has been unlawfully occupied
by these two evil neighbors. Its India who stands alone against this
axis of evil, surrounded by nuclear powered hostile countries, acting
like vultures! Pakistan and China not only encroached on a vast Indian
territory, but then divided between themselves like a cake! Better be
aware of the real actual facts, if you are not!

Do you think india and pakistan are enemies because of the tiny region called kashmir.
That shows how educated you are in this article. Since 1947 kashmir is part of india.
Also is arunachal pradesh a state in eastern india, himalayan ranges..
Now China refused to give visa to residents of the state claiming the state as a part of China.
As an outsider in europe your press may not be knowing the truth as is.
So to conclude I would say that you are just an innocent baby on this issue!

India a democracy? What a joke!!!
We in the West only call it so because it suits our interest re trade/business etc.
But everyone knows it is certainly not a democracy - its very system is based on caste and discriminatory policies.
Its conduct in Kashmir is disgraceful (2010 being a recent example) and it is time we treated it with the contempt it deserves.

Kashmiris are not Indian. I am a Kashmiri, I am not Indian in culture, race or religion.
I have nothing in common with India thank god. Kashmir is not part of India.
Try understanding this fact -the Kashmiris do not want to be linked to India in any shape or form.
We will not forget the killing and rape of our families by land grabbing Indians.
India accepted this more than 60 years ago and agreed to give my people a referendum at the UN which it has failed to deliver.
It now remains up to us to free ourselves like other nations rather than expect India to follow through.

(Looks like Manav and KKR called each other before adding comments.)

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

Yasmin Ali owned this article about Kashmir as theirs inside out. And you know just yesterday, i was talking to my Kashmiri friend and his family. And everybody was talking about this article and they were ridiculing so called India's democracy which has not even practiced their own UN promise. And yes, Kashmir is disputed territory to the least and should be listed this way until Kashmiris don't get their independence Insha'allah.

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

exactly Kashmiris have clearly said it many times before .. they are not part of India and never will be!
its a disputed part between Indian AND Pakistan .. it will never be intregated part of India! period!!

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

If you look at bigger picture this is a small example of how a up and coming nation like India can influence something they do not like.

If the muslims where united as one they could also have influence political situations.

for example when the cartoons of prophet(saw) where made in Denmark few years ago where was the saudi, iran, turkey and other so called muslim nations the people where angry but the politicians couldn’t do a thing.

why because they divided into 55 weak states with no influence and no effect and secular puppet rulers.

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

Is this tolerant (?) india and indian democracy (?), interesting :rotfl:

Re: Economist accuses India of censorship over Kashmir map

Comments by Yasmin Ali show how Kashmiris see this whole conflict.

India a democratic country is really a joke as Christine Brierly has rightly pointed out.
