England is ranked #8 in ICC ODI rankings anyway. So I don’t think it can fall down even more at this point.
However, as ehsan has pointed out Younis has good scores against others teams as well, especially since he has gotten the additional responsibility of Vice Captain and stand-in captain. So using Younis as a barometer of patheticness of the current English team can be quite misleading.
I had my doubts when you earlier commented that Pakistan ODI squad should have Mushtaq and Sami, but now I am sure that you haven’t much followed Pakistan cricket and younis khan in the last 2 years, which is a shame. Let me do a little recap for you.
Younis Khan is a prime example of a cricketer who after having a mediocre start in international cricket, slowly and gradually cemented his place into his team and now is reaching a point in his career from where he can transform himself into Mr. Dependable for Pakistan.
He may not belong to the elite class of Dravid, Ponting or Lara but it is good enough for Pakistan that he is one of the best players in Pakistan test and ODI playing 11, right now. Not to forget he is going to be our futre captain as well.
Had you followed his career during the last 2 years, you would have never comeup with this pointless thread.
Younis Khan’s career can easily be divided into different stages and the latest one consist of his most outstanding contribution for Pakistan cricket. It is senseless to present his overall career average/acheivements to criticize him, mainly because he has transformed into a player of totally different class today. Let me tell you how well he has transformed.
After regaining his spot in the test side since 2004 October, he has played 19 test matches and scored 2,204 runs at an average of 65 with 7 centuries and 6 half centuries.
Now compare that with his average since the start of his career in 2000 through 2003 after which he lost his spot for 1 year from Pakistan test side. He scored 1,680 in 28 matches at an average of 37.
Does that explain you something?
Even when he regained his spot in the test side, he had his critics who were against his position in the ODI team. Slowly he has started to show how well he can adjust himself in the ODI side. Don’t look at his scores of 2000, '01, '02 or '03.
After the 2005 series against India, which did wonders for his test career, he started performing in the ODI team as well. Since that series he has scored approx. 700 in 20 matches at an average of 40+. During this time he has played on different batting positions, from one down though late middle order.
Some of his scores were 40,48, 60,81*, 74*, 41, 71*, 55 and 101.
If you further narrow it down, you will see that his ODI average is touching 60 in his last 10 ODI’s
It is pretty clear that this guy is improving after every match and it is really a shame that arm chair critics have failed to observe that. But then why should I bother, it is their job to criticize just for the sake of criticism.
Younis certainly has proved his critics wrong in the past year or so. I really dont blame the critics for questioning his place in the ODI side as he had a poor track record but many people look at the averages and fail to realize that Younis played most of his career at 6th or 7th position. By the time it was his turn to bat we were either in a stage of crisis and he use to come under pressure or we were in great shape and needed to hit out.
Previously we use to have the two openers (be it Butt, Farhat, Hameed, Taufeeq) and Shoaib Malik at one down position followed by Yousuf and Inzi.
Younis is finally getting a chance to actually shine by coming one down and have the "luxury" of spending some time on the crease.
On a seperate note, although it's great that Younis is playing well at the one down position but that seems to have screwed up another consistent run getter Shoaib Malik. He has been off color so far in the series and his track record as one down was excellent. While I am not suggesting that Younis be moved from his position as he is a better batsman then Malik but then I dont really think Malik has a place in the XI. It should be a toss up between Malik, Afridi and Razzaq and Malik, if selected over one of those two should be batted lower down the order where he could be explosive as he demonstrated when he use to play down the order. Some people might remember how he take the South African attack apart and left Pollock wondering where to bowl to him. We need to start playing a genuine opener or try and open with Akmal (he couldnt do any worse then what he has been doing so far on this tour) and move Malik down the order forming an explosive lower middle order along with Afridi and Razzaq.
Haaaaaa.
Younis Khan is only third to Inzy and Shoaib on my squad as well (if I have to select my Pak side) . The 3rd position must stay with Malik, anyway.
I was amused at this when they showed it during the match (3rd ODI). Its not that much difficult to score against England right now as their key bowlers (Harmison and FlintOff) are missing. So Younis (here) really tells the story of how good English attack is. There are no replacement for Flintoffff or Harmison and if both of them are out…
Similarly, the squad need no change. Mushtaq was a blunder and the one(s) who selected him last year. Similarly with Asif, Rana and Shoaib (all-fit) in the team, there is almost no need for Sami or any other pacer.
(Now this is for demonstration only)
We have 3 bowlers, 3 batsmen, 1 wicket-keeper and 4 all rounders…
An all-rounder is a plus but we have 4. Now at any stage,
If an all-rounder makes no score ----> He is an all-rounder (Pak left with 3 batsmen + KA)
[3rd ODI] 37 runs (274 runs were scored**)**
Younis Khan is developing into the Pakistani Dravid. I find both these players very similar in temperament and likeability. During this series, Yousuf's play notwithstanding, Younis was the key pin in the batting lineup, IMO.
Only this comment:
Younis = specialist batsmen
Younis = excellent in field (although most of our players are close in fielders and not that reliable in outfield.
Younis = only hope for Pakistan as a replacement to Inzimam as a captian when he retires.
So, if you axe him, then do you have a replacement in the above three categories?
bhai zaan kaisi baatayn kar rahay ho… Younis played 23 matches out of 71 (# of games he played until then) at one down position until 2003 (probably until world cup). His average in those 71 matches was 31.22 while in the 23 matches his average was 23.95. Anyone with sane mind would’ve criticized him.
He played only 16 games out of those 71 on position 6 while only 3 games on position 7.
so a bulk of position he played was on 3rd or 5th where his career averages are below 30. Its only after series against India in India that he is going up :k:
^^ UA your post has made me ponder on something totally different...
I must give credit where credit is due....
but you also reaffirmed something I said in another thread...we do mismanage our players...
This is a sorted list of his best ODI scores. Even in 8, I don’t find SA. Younis is a quality player and he must have scored 50+ against good opponents as well. but in his 5 best scores, only one is against a good opponent. 2 in 8 and both against India and Indo-Pak matches are played for charity, and friendship (:)).
