Looking for some menu ideas for an Iftaar that will not require a lot of kitchen time.
So far, I have the following items on my list of possibilities:
Chana Chaat
Is there an easy way to make maash ke dahi baray?
Pre-made samosas fried (or baked - is that even a good idea?)
Pre-made egg rolls fried (same question as above if anyone has baked these things…how they’ve turned out)
Pakoray
Melon Chaat
Baked Chicken
Baked Shami - has anyone done this? Am I asking for a disaster?
I guess less oily stuff but definitely desi items…or ones with a desi twist to them.
I don’t know about pre-made egg rolls but the once I make at home, I always make bake them in the oven. They turn out fine - I like them that way. I feel when you deep fry them the “sheets” soak up too much oil
I know many people who bake their egg rolls/samosas…I personally don’t like to because I like getting a nice even golden color which is hard to obtain with baking.
It depends on what type of wrapper is used. We use spring roll wrappers to make our rolls…baking works fine with those!
I used to make a big batch of mash daal dahi baray and freeze them in small serving sizes. All I had to do was take a small pack, soak in water for few hours, before iftar whip the yogurt and assemble the dahi baras.
To get golden crust on samosas and rolls, leave them in oven for a longer period on 250F.
Soak mash daal for an hour. Blend it into a thick paste with little garlic, salt, and little red chilli for kick. Fry the barhas as you fry pakoras on mediumish heat till golden brown. Soak them in room temperature water for 5-10 mins or so. Squeeze the water out of them. Lay them in a dish. Sprinkle some chaat masala. Pour salted yogurt over them and garnish.
That’s exactly how I make my maash ki daal ke dahi barray, except I mix the chaat masala in the whipped yogurt, and being Hydro lol, we add a bhagaar of lasan, karri patta and zeera…it takes it to whole other level lol!
Reha, I bake my samosa the parat walay and spring rolls. Just spray a little olive oil on them and bake them in the toaster oven. They are fewer in calories and just as crispy. You have to turn them after the top is crispy and allow the other side to become nice and toasty brown. This year I am planning on freezing paneer palak samosas, keema egg rolls and chicken veggie rolls.
