earthquake warning system

Re: Do We have a Disaster Force in Pakistan

u can take a guy out of the third world but u can’t take out the third world mentality that resides in his rotten mind.

Re: which brings us to the question.

sorry for bringing a month old thread up but after the earthquake that hit north Pakistan I just had to put this question out to everyone.

Do we have a Disaster Recovery Plan in Pakistan for differentr agencies and departments?

if not, why not? if so, then how promising is the efficiency of that plan?

Re: which brings us to the question.

Exactly, and if youre heading towards the shoreline, you can just tell the sea infrotn of your is higher, which is quite a sight indeed.

Re: which brings us to the question.

Parts of Karachi resemble New Orleans after 15 minutes of rain, I am sure karachiites will cope.

Re: which brings us to the question.

Usually at a time of need, Pakistan government in my opinion, has always stepped forward, and delivered to the best of their abilities. To give you an example(and it has nothing to do with a national disaster), in 1990, when we had a massive influx of Pakistanis coming back from Kuwait due to the first Gulf war, the Pakistani governmnet provided Rs.6000 for each family at the Pakistan-Iran border. Ofcourse it was not a big amount, but I remember very well, that it helped alot of people get to their respective cities safely...Just my nine cents.

Re: which brings us to the question.

As per Google Earth, some areas of Karachi are only 9 feet above, some areas are 170+ feet above sea level. Mine is 116 feet

earthquake warning system

is there such a system out that can warn people before an earth quake comes? are there any countries which utilize similar warning systems?

Re: earthquake warning system

The exact time of a quake cannot be predicted, atleast not with the present technology research, but I guess its becoming more and more important to come up with a system to do so, and more research and efforts will probably be made for their prediction.

Re: earthquake warning system

hopefuly soon!

Re: earthquake warning system

Some American research groups are currently experimenting by placing sensors in California to try to and figure out patterns in order to predict earthquakes. No definitive method of predicting earthquakes exist right now. Even with best case scenario, the heads up is not more than a few minutes, which is meaningless for most largely populated areas.

Re: earthquake warning system

Earthquake? No... Snowfalls, floods, heavy storm? Yes

Re: earthquake warning system

What Pakistan needs, and realistically can be done, is proper city planning and proper strong construction. The buildings that fell, many of them, the construction wasn't strong enough to resist the force of the quake.

Especially if we're talking about a mountainous area.

And most importantly, Pakistan needs an official national disaster team that can handle and coordinate disaster relief efficiently. As best as people and organizations are working right now, there is much room for improvement. The national disaster team needs to be equipped with proper relief equipment (removing rubble, etc to recover bodies for example), and also manpower.

Re: earthquake warning system

This might sound stupid but how about training animals to detect seismic activity. Animals have very fine tuned senses, including ESP, and can therefore make news out of the slightest symptoms.

Re: which brings us to the question.

That was 92, not 94. Took me 8 hours instead of 20 minutes to get home from school!

Re: earthquake warning system

And how are you going to train those animals to communicate this information to you?

Re: earthquake warning system

Speaking of california, wasnt there an earthquake there too yesterday, but a much lower scale?

Re: earthquake warning system

PCG what you are saying is something only Japan can afford. We are but a poor country. People in villages build houses with what ever is available.

As far as disaster relief is concerned, you will be surprised to know that we do have plans on the government level. No one could have imagined the scale of this disaster or of any disaster before hand. Our machinery and army was mobilized immediately.

Why are you always so negative about Pakistan? Cant you see the effort? What you dont see on tv are the army jawans and some other NGOs, who were placed in the remote areas, already helping people out. Appreciate the effort the government and common citizens have put together, for once, please.

Re: earthquake warning system

Get them to write a 10 page report in MS Word, print it out and FedEx it to the U.S. Geological dept. They cant use email yet.

Captain Lota

Re: earthquake warning system

Actually if you had followed news few days after Tsunami, some research organization in Sri Lanka (or east Asian) country did say that they have found animals sensing such disasters earlier than human can see/feel it and they will focus on observing animal behavior and try to develop a warning system based on that.
