Australia sharply increases earthquake aid

CANBERRA: Australia Monday pledged 5.5 million dollars (4.18 million US) in aid to the victims of the South Asian earthquake, up from an initial 500,000 dollar emergency relief promised at the weekend.

“We’ll initially be providing an additional five million now to international aid agencies, the Red Cross, the Red Crescent, the United Nations organisations, to focus on the provision of basic shelter, food and potable water,” Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said.

a 42-member British Rescue team ‘Canis’, equipped with latest technology and sniffing dogs, has taken control of the rescue operation at the Tower and took out seven people alive from the debris. The army experts kept supervising the operation.

A 19-member rescue team of Abu Dubai Police has also joined the rescue operation.
GENEVA: Six more UN experts left Switzerland Sunday for Islamabad to join a humanitarian aid coordination team in regions hit by a massive south Asian earthquake that killed more than 19,000 people, mainly in Pakistan, this weekend.

A first team of eight UN workers arrived in Islamabad Saturday to set up humanitarian coordination operations in the Pakistani capital and at its airport as well as in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir, said UN spokeswoman Elizabeth Byrs.

Three other UN teams based in Islamabad have also sent rapid evaluation missions to the affected areas and the UN has made available 100,000 dollars (82,450 euros) for emergency aid, Byrs said.

The World Bank has offered 20 million dollars to Pakistan to help deal with the tragedy unleashed by the South Asia earthquake, its chief Paul Wolfowitz said Sunday

Chinese government has announced $ 6.2 million aid for earthquake victims in Pakistan.

A Chinese rescue team was sent Sunday to quake-devastated Pakistan with search dogs and 17 tons of equipment.

some more pictures of the devastation.

Re: aid from all around the world.

umair: US is sending their team of 7 people to assess the damage and has promised to send more aid in $$ after the assesment report. they have already sent out the much needed helicopters requested by pakistan immediately. i am sure they will increase their aid after they know for certain how much damage has occured. aside from that one must keep in mind that US is also dealing with their own natural disaster of hurricanes katrina and rita and also helping out in Guatamala devastation. so any help provided from any country in any amount is vital at this point.

Re: Earthquake in Pakistan (merged threads)

Is the Eidhi centre here in Canada also accepting clothes/food? Or is donating money the only way to go right now?

Re: aid from all around the world.

Providing $100,000 +food/supplies/Heli’s is a knee jerk reaction. A substantial Aid package will be forthcoming.

Re: aid from all around the world.

Actually, the United States has now allocated a quite hefty $50 million to the Pakistan Earthquake Relief effort - that is not just the single largest donation by any country so far, but it also an initial allocation i.e. more money will follow later.

In response to the request of President Musharraf and the Government of Pakistan, the United States is providing an initial contribution of up to $50 million for relief and reconstruction following the earthquake that struck on October 8.](http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/10/20051009-1.html)

Thank you America - God bless you. :k:

Re: aid from all around the world.

Actually it is good to hear the responce of the people of Pakistan and around the world.. but the sad things is that the people in Kashmir are still stuck under rubble and no one has even reached there to help them.. All the foreign rescue teams seem to rescue the people under the Margalla tower .. and then the Tv shows people in far away places who are crying for help but not even a single military or rescue worker is there. If the GEO tv can get to those places why cant the rescue teams?

Re: aid from all around the world.

Money at the moment is not the issue …

The most important are logistics, that is, more** transport helicoptor**, which are direly needed at the moment. And US is the country which is providing that specifically. We should be grateful for that :k:

Re: aid from all around the world.

US-led force in Afghanistan to send five Chinooks to Pakistan KABUL, Oct 10 (AFP) - The US-led coalition in Afghanistan is to send five Chinook heavy-lift helicopters and three Blackhawks and their support staff to quake-hit Pakistan Monday, with Afghanistan also despatching four choppers. The eight US helicopters and their crews would provide rescue, recovery and logistics assistance, the coalition said in a statement. The country's Red Crescent Society would also despatch a large quantity of food, medicine and rescue teams, it said. (Posted @ 12:25 PST)

Re: aid from all around the world.

Allah knows how many money will actually be provided....beac this is a known thing thing countries like US dont fullfil their promise...few weeks back,in dawn,i came accross an article in which the author strongly criticized western powers for not fullfiling their promises in the tsunami crisis timings...
i hope arab countries and britain pakis will contribute alot

canadians gearing up to help pakistan

www.thestar.com

Canadians are again being called upon to dig into their wallets to help victims of tragedy, this time the area near the Pakistan-India border where a strong earthquake Saturday killed tens of thousands of people and left many more homeless.
World Vision Canada is hoping to reach a target of $100,000 in donations from Canadians to support relief efforts in the area.

Emmanuel Isch, World Vision’s emergency response director, said today he is confident that Canadians will continue to be generous despite the huge financial outpouring following last year’s tsunami and the recent devastation caused by hurricanes in the southern United States.

Isch said so far, donor fatigue is not a factor.

“There’s always that concern, given the last year we’ve had, but from our perspective if there’s a threshold, we haven’t reached it yet and we continue to be amazed that Canadians do respond.”

World Vision will send five members, including three Canadians, as a part of its global rapid response team to Pakistan to offer logistical and communications support to other members on the ground.

The organization is in the process of committing $250,000 US to the relief effort.

Canadian Red Cross spokeswoman Suzanne Charest said as of this afternoon, her agency had received $40,000 in private donations.

“We are seeing a very high level of generosity from Canadians in spite of there having been so many disasters this year. I think that when there is need, Canadians do respond as much as possible,” she said.

The Canadian Red Cross has no immediate plans to send volunteers to the region.

International Red Cross workers are already assisting with first aid and search-and-rescue efforts in Islamabad and Kashmir, Charest said.

UNICEF Canada spokeswoman Nicole Ireland said they’ve raised $15,000 through phone and online donations, and are hoping to reach a target of $250,000.

“The response has been incredible, particularly considering that it’s the Thanksgiving long weekend,” she said. “I think this is a very strong indication that Canadians are still willing to give.”

Ireland said half of the affected earthquake victims are children, one-fifth of them under the age of five.

Gail Neudorf, CARE Canada emergency team co-ordinator, said one Canadian team member was on his way to Islamabad to help the organization’s international team.

Neudorf said CARE International is surveying the extent of damage to determine how best to focus their efforts, and called on Canadians to give what they can.

“This is really devastating to a very poor population in Pakistan, and of course there’s going to be massive aid needed to support them over the next several years as we rebuild these villages that have been completely destroyed,” she said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew visited with members of the South Asian community in his Montreal riding today.

“I have told them that we will be continuing to assess the needs and that we will be re-evaluating the assistance Canada will be able to do,” he said.

Pettigrew said there are no plans to deploy DART, the Disaster Assistance Response Team, to the region, but any request would be considered.

Canada has pledged $100,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for an early-needs assessment, with an additional $200,000 to the Canadian High Commission in Pakistan to respond to urgent requirements.

Its good to see some goray candians taking initiative to help pakistan! Hopefuly major companies in canada will start private fundraising also just like they did with tsunami!

**Millions of pounds are donated in UK as scale of the horror emerges **](http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article318395.ece)

The British public pledged millions of pounds last night as charities launched donation lines and relief appeals for the victims of the Pakistan earthquake.

Oxfam reported the first hour of its appeal had raised more than £50,000.

The Queen sent a message to Pakistan’s president today expressing her " heartfelt sympathy" at the devastation, a sentiment echoed by Prime Minister Tony Blair in a message and subsequent telephone call to General Pervez Musharraf.

In her message to General Musharraf, the Queen said: “I was shocked to hear of the devastating earthquake which has caused such destruction and loss of life in Pakistan. I send my heartfelt sympathy to you and the people of Pakistan, especially to the bereaved and injured and all who have been affected by this terrible disaster.”

Prime Minister Tony Blair promised that the the UK stood ready to provide more assistance “as and when required”.

He said: “We are immensely proud of our close ties to Pakistan, made even closer by the large population of British citizens, who trace their origins to the Kashmir region. Such ties make the growing number of casualties even harder to bear.”

Muslim charities including Muslim Aid, Islamic Relief, Kashmir International Relief Fund and Muslim Hands were among the first to mobilise appeals for the homeless or injured. They were joined by charities including Oxfam and Unicef UK, which set up relief teams and sent tents, clothes and medicines to the troubled regions.

The Muslim Council of Britain said more than £3m would be collected from mosques as the shocked community prayed during Ramadan. Sir Iqbal Sacranie, its secretary general, said: "All major mosques in the country have launched appeals in their local areas. We have been hearing that hundreds of families in the UK have found out their close relatives, their dear ones, children of relatives, have suffered from the tragedy … so it is not people in another part of the world.

It is their own ones who are suffering." He added: “My estimate today was, by this evening, we would be getting from the mosques of the country in excess of £3m, but it will go higher.”

Muslim Aid, which had initially pledged £100,000, had increased the amount to £250,000 yesterday, after receiving £150,000 from the public. Ebrahim Sa Mohamed, the charity’s chief executive, said: “A lot of people are ringing in and offering anything ranging from £3,000 to £1.”

The charity provided 300 tents and 1,200 blankets, along with its partner organisation, Khidmat, as well as arranging for water tanks and sanitation facilities in Kashmiri regions. A longer-term rehabilitation programme was launched with house rebuilding and “suitable livelihood” initiatives under way, providing homes and jobs for survivors.

Parveen Khan, from the Kashmir International Relief Fund, said the organisation had gathered thousands of pounds from donations. Oxfam was offering about 60,000 tents and 300,000 blankets, jerry cans and hygiene kits

In the single largest donation so far of any country - in fact an amount that is more than all others countries combined in total.
