        Bureau report

PESHAWAR: Two women were among five people injured when a strong quake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale hit parts of NWFP in the wee hours of Sunday.

The epicentre of the quake was in Hindukush region, which besides Peshawar also jolted various cities of Punjab, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Azad Kashmir. Due to the tremor and aftershocks, people came out of their homes in panic.

Soon after the powerful string of earthquake, three injured persons identified as Tahir Shah, Safirullah and Arshad were rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar. They were treated and their condition was stated to be stable.

In Mardan district, a woman died while two others sustained injuries. In Takhtbahi tehsil, a 70-year-old widow Zarpari of village Maday Baba was pronounced dead because of heart failure in the wake of earthquake. Another two women suffered multiple wounds when roofs of their houses collapsed in separate incidents because of the tremor that rattled the district severely. The wife of Muhammad Rasool, a resident of Lund Khwar village, got seriously injured when the roof of the room fell down in the earthquake.

In another incident in the nearby Mayar village, wife of Muhammad Javed sustained injuries when the roof of the room caved in because of the earthquake. Both the injured women were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Mardan, where their condition was stated to be stable. No reports of casualties were received from Hazara division — the most affected area in October 8, 2005 earthquake.
