‘Earthquake’ hits Gujarat state

Reports are coming in of an earthquake in the western Indian state of Gujarat.
A BBC correspondent in the state’s commercial capital, Ahmedabad, says tremors were felt shortly before midnight local time (1830 GMT).

People have fled their homes he says. Similar reports have come from other cities in the state, including Surat.

Meteorological officials in the Indian capital, Delhi, say they do not know how strong the tremors were, or the epicentre, Reuters news agency reports.

Five years ago Gujarat was rocked by an earthquake that left more than 20,000 people dead.

India’s Gujarat State Is Rocked by Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake

March 8 (Bloomberg) – India’s western state of Gujarat was struck by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its Web site.

The quake struck at 11:50 p.m. yesterday Indian time, the Survey said. Its epicenter was in the remote Rann of Kutch area near the border with Pakistan.

People fled from their homes in Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s commercial capital, lying about 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the epicenter, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported early today. There aren’t any reports of casualties or damage, it said.

India’s last big earthquake took place in Gujarat on Jan. 26, 2001, with a magnitude of 6.9, killing 13,805 people and damaging 1.2 million homes.

India’s capital, New Delhi, was rocked by last October’s 7.6 magnitude quake that took place about 750 kilometers away in the Kashmir region divided between India and Pakistan. The quake killed 73,331 people in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province. More than 1,200 people were killed on the Indian side of the divided territory.

The quake yesterday was at a depth of 10 kilometers, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was centered 825 kilometers from New Delhi, the Survey said on its Web site.
