After following the recent earthquake disaster very closely, I have to say this is the worst possible coverage of a natural disaster one can find. Both ARY and Geo TV have provided very little information about the disaster. Especially during the month of Ramzaan they are broadcasting pathetic shows like Kata kut and lafanga videos rather then informing their audience on what matters the most. They show updates every 30 mintues but nothing more.
This is compared to American coverage of Hurricane Katrina and September 11th where coverage was on 24/7 for several weeks.
This is weak and I have actually had to surf the net to get the latest updates. Imagine the people who have missing relatives in those cities, and how frustrated they are.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
Agree 100%. I am very disappointed with our Paki TV media. They have no importance for all the people dying out there. Musi videos and Qawalis are more important apparently.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
The news on ARY today is much better than yesterday.
I was really frustrated yesterday because all they kept saying was this and that leader telephoned Musharraff. ![]()
Re: Earthquake Coverage
Finally today GEO has started showing interviews with victims and their families. How ridiculous is that ? It took them 2 days to show actual footage of relief camps and people who have actually been affected. I think BBC is a better source for latest news upto the minute.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
ARY is doing a hotline program where people from North America are paying charity, we must commend them for that.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
u guys havent been following, ARY gave amazing coverage right after the earthquake hit, they were awesome, but yesterday there coverage was not good!
Re: Earthquake Coverage
I've had the TV on non-stop, and I was pretty satisfied with their coverage.
They gave the 3-Day nationwide mourning annoucnement yesterday I think. After that, if you notice, the shows have been drastically cut down - at least I didn't see anything that was entertainment based.
I think initially when the tragedy hit, they didn't realize the amount of damage. They probably thought it was that one building in Islamabad. It was when they understood what had happened, that they started nonstop fundraising on these channels.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
Indus NEWS had a pretty good coverage as well.
It was actually shocking to see some channels still playing music even though it's Ramadan and on top we have this tragedy.
PTV focused too much on Margalla towers but it was too hard to reach some of the Northern Areas and kashmir i guess.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
Please, guys before donating blindly check the crediablity of the organizations you're giving your money to. Between me, my family and my relatives we have quite a big sum to donate. And before just the money to any fund raiser appearing on prime, we're checking all the options. Because I feel that donating money to a wrong person without varrifying their crediablity is just as wrong as not donating at all.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
Their coverage in the US has been pretty good! Infact ever since Ramadan started, Geo and ARY are not showing their regular programming at all. It has been Taraweeh, Naats, qawwalis, news all day long.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
They keep talking about margalla towers again and again and agian.
Not that it's not tragic or those lives were not important. I feel miserable
for those who are still not found or may be under debri, and their families ofcourse.
There were also whole villages that were destryed. There are prolly thousands if not
millions, missing. They just aren't giving enuf information on those.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
The coverage of the earthquake has gotten much better :k:
I liked the program with Edhi and now they have Dr. Shahid Masood in Balakot and he gave an update on the situation via phone.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
We have had our t.v. on since yesterday, switching back and forth between ARY and GEO. I don't know what you guys are talking about. Occassionally, there was a music video, but they have been pretty much showing earthquake coverage most of the time. I am with Spock and PCG here. Today, both channels had a fundraising program going on, raising money for the victims. Even yesterday they were showing live footage from Islamabad as well as interviews through out the day with reporters who were live on the scene.
You guys have to keep in mind that a lot of the media hasn't even been able to get to the villages and far off locations yet. It's going to take time. We are now heading into our third day after the earthquake hit. Look at the time frame, situation, the initial assessment of damage and them finally realising exactly how much devastation this earthquake caused. I think the Pakistani media has done a great job of informing us here in North America of what is going on. The BBC is also doing a good job, but for up to date information, I have no problem tuning into the Pakistani channels.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
They have been showing footage from mostly Islamabad because that's where their camera crews could go. I don't think they can even get into and through muzaffarabad and all the villages that have been destroyed, since there are big rocks blocking the roads.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
Nonetheless, they need to get more active in showing these other areas. They keep showing that one margalla tower.
Here is an article exerpt:
The aid workers were critical of the state-run television and other private networks for ignoring the worst-hit Hazara region and some parts of Malakand. “They are just focussing on a building in Islamabad that would have killed less than one hundred people. But there is nobody to show to the world that thousands of women, men and children have been killed and the whole cities have been destroyed,” one Mohammad Ali complained.

Do look at the images.. They are so horrible. :(:(![]()
You can go look at the videos here ll…
Everything is destroyed. Also, you’ll be able to see Musafarabad and Kashmir in these videos too.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
It's just really really really really sad the way poeple are
still tapped under margalla and who knows where else for 3 days.
My heart just goes out to them. Khuda un ki mushkil aasan karay.
Re: Earthquake Coverage
I dont understadn why they are saying that all roads are closed. There are towns completely wiped out north of Mansehra and the roads are OPEN! camrea crews can easily go there and film all the devastation!
Re: Earthquake Coverage
I think the coverage has been quite good, especially now that they are covering the news from the remote villages. I have to say that I am not a big fan of ARY, however, Geo has some good coverage.
