Re: google turned off the lights

Google users in the United Kingdom will notice today that Google has “turned the lights out” on the Google.co.uk homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour.

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone.

On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

Re: Earth Hour 3/29 8 Pm local time

According to some, an all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts.

Google, which has a white background and gets about 200 million queries a day could reduce global energy use by 750 Megawatt-hours a year by simply changing the color of its homepage to black.

BTW, we’re turning off the lights tonight and going out to a fade to black concert that’s being powered by renewable energy sources.

Re: google turned off the lights

It’s an iconic move by Google. Good work. My applause.

I just checked the site and realised instantly what’s going on. Came here, and saw this thread.

That’s a class.

Re: Earth Hour 3/29 8 Pm local time

If you click on the link Google provides, it explains that this is not true. I even opened a thread about it in general a while back (titled Blackle.com or something like that). Basically, this is a common misconception. It’s true, you would save energy if it was a black screen with the old monitors, but with the new ones, it doesn’t make a difference what color/shade is being displayed. It’s all the same amount of energy.
