How is it done.
does the husband give a specified amount to wife and she manages the shopping from within that amount
or
does husband keep the amount with him and pays for the shopping directly while shopping.
and which way is better and why

We have a joint account and both have debt and credit cards. Actually even my dad has card from my account. In daily life, I am spend thrifty specially when it comes to kids and she has to reign me in.
For savings, I take care of investments and stuff.

Joint account and both of our salaries go directly in there…there are separate savings accounts.
For grocery and household items we do have a specific budget we stick to and try not to exceed that. Its easy with a 3 person household. Money is just set aside and we draw from that for our grocery trips. I do all of the shopping normally.

Oifu does the shopping while I browse the magazine section. Both of us have same access to the accounts so the issue has not come up.

Husband and I have a joint checking account for all household expenses. We have a prederrimenrd budget set for monthly groceries. I do all the grocery shopping and basically run the household management, he manages the finances and let’s me know if I need to reign back a little. We make all big financial decisions and set our budgets for everything together.

We have a budget set for groceries. He’s way better at grocery shopping than I am, so he does our groceries.

I think these days most couples proceed the way everyone has mentioned above. My mum’s generation was different, especially if the wife was not working. Even now, my dad gives my mum a set amount every week to cover groceries and whatever else she wants to buy for herself. I don’t know any case where the husband keeps the money and spends directly on groceries and the wife doesn’t have any access or control.

If you’re going to set aside then you need to figure out what you personally need on a weekly/monthly basis because every family is different. For food shopping, I don’t have a strict budget but there is a range I like to keep within every week so we can have a consistent amount surplus for saving every month. Sometimes that just goes out of the window. Like last month we had family over a number of times plus I was buying more treat stuff for us and some stuff needed restocking (atta etc), so I spent twice what I usually would.

I do most of the grocery shopping after receiving a shopping list through WhatsApp. 
But she has access to our joint account and to her own account of course, so whenever she does the grocery shopping herself, it’s not an issue.
