Re: Dying in Britain
UK is one the most working class friendly countries on earth. You don’t have to use NHS, rich and famous visitors certainly don’t use it, plenty of private health care options are available.
It’s unfortunate that austerity is really hitting the NHS hard, but all in all, it’s still one of the greatest legacies of WWII. We build the greatest welfare system from the ruins of war. Those of you who know the history of your own country, NHS is perhaps the proudest achievement of Britain as a society, it’s a true national institution. I hope NHS survives this wretched coalition.
Re: Dying in Britain
@Jolie, one would hope but the dismantling of the NHS is accelerating, as initiated by New Labour. An example: NHS privatisation fears deepen over £1bn deal | Society | The Guardian
As for some of the other posts in this thread, opinions are worthless when you are ignorant of facts and lack knowledge.
Re: Dying in Britain
Unfortunately, things will certainly get worse before they get better. Hoping against hope that NHS survives, although I definitely welcome some form of change.
Re: Dying in Britain
Err not really..
World statistics tell a very different story.. look them up..
Re: Dying in Britain
I would like to see somewhat of a free market within the UK healthcare industry. If the free market can work for numerous other industires, why not healthcare. Where there is competition, companies are obviously forced to improve thier product/service and push down prices to remain competitive.
Re: Dying in Britain
some stats- I think for spending as much per capita as US does, one would expect the results to be phenomenal.
God Bless Obama for the reform to stop insurance being denied for preexisting conditions and the ridiculous caps on coverage..which basically exposed many to bankruptcy if they were afflicted with some illness and hit the limit the insurance company was going to pay out. Who has the stats of the percentage of bankruptcies in US which are due to healthcare?
Now there is no doubt that US has some of the best hospitals in the world.. the issue is not that. The issue is overall healthcare for everyone, and what you get for your money…
How does US healthcare compare to the rest of the world? | News | theguardian.com
per capita spending on healthcare
US-6719 UK-2815
doctors/1000
US-26 UK-23
Nurses and Midwives per 1000
US-94
UK-128
Hospital needs per 1000
US 31
UK 39
Life expectancy at Birth
US 78
UK 80
Interactive stats tool- a little dated but worth a look..

Dying in Britain. Only half as bad as living in Britain.

Re: Dying in Britain
As much as people may complain about the NHS in England, I still think it’s better than the US system of healthcare. There are so many uninsured here and the Insurance companies are such greedy corporations and absolutely raping the system, making it a pain for doctors and patients. Be thankful that you have the NHS there, because if you are uninsured over here, and end up going to Emergency, it can likely bankrupt you.
Re: Dying in Britain
you are right, medical bills are the biggest cause for bankruptcies.
I am all for the advanced hospitals as I have said already, but until the caps were removed, insurance companies would gladly let you die or go bankrupt trying to live if you exceeded the lifetime maximum they were going to pay for your care. The greed and corruption in US healthcare is astonishing. Even now how the physicians and insurance companies are responding to healthcare reform is pure jack assery.
Medical Bills Are the Biggest Cause of US Bankruptcies: Study
read this article, see how the glorious healthcare here is in reality, crippling those who can’t afford out of pocket maximums, those foregoing prescription medicine. UK healthcare is far from being perfect, but this shyt is just unbelievable and sadly very true.
