DVDs not working

well I got some DVDs from Pakistan and guess what they don’t play on the DVD player? What do I do besides trashing them?
Anyone knows why?

Thanks

Should have posted this in the Tech talk section. Neways, I dunno much, but maybe it is due to the NTSC , PAL thingy.
The VHS cassettes or dvds from India, pak, europe are usually in PAL format, and in U.S and Canada, they are in NTSC format. So, dvd players here are designed to play NTSC ones(though there are some new players which are code free i.e, they can play any format dvd). So, I guess this is the problem. It is wiser to throw away those dvds than buying a code free dvd player( it is much expensive than the normal ones). Or else U can rip them off and burn vcds in NTSC format....I am not sure but I guess it can be done.

Chandbeti Thanks for the info. You are right, I should have posted it in the other forum. Thanks again :)

You got a DVD from pakistan? Highly unlikely. Must of been a vcd. Are you sure it is a DVD? If not , I am guessing it's a vcd. Maybe your dvd player is not vcd compatible.

In Pakistan, you can get DVD's. While VCD's cost a mere 30-50 rupees, DVD's cost about 100-150 rupees, though the quality of the movies are as bad as VCD (mostly camera prints, if they are english movies).

roshnie, depending on where you are, this might be region issue. While PAL/NTCS are terms used for TV's and VHS, for DVD's you have to check if they are for Region 1 or 2 (1=US, 2=Europe). Same thing, different names.

Anyway, most DVD's sold in Pakistan are region 1. Actually it says on the back that they are in NTSC format. If thats the case, then you can may be able to run it in a multi-system DVD player. If, by some chance its the region 2 DVD, and you have a US DVD player (there are very few people who have multi-system DVD players in North America), then its probably not worth it. A multi-system DVD player will cost you about 300 bucks (US$).

Trash them. If it makes you feel slightly better, their quality would have been terrible anyway.

Thank you for your replies.

Hskhan: You are right. some of them are DVDs & some VCDs.

Faisal: Good information. I did not know that.

I've been told that DVDs from Pakistan and England do not work in North America. It is similar to the PAL/NTSC thing. You have to make sure it is a certain code ..... either 1 or 2 as Faisal has pointed out .... and depending on that, it will work here.

All DVD's I bought from Karachi and Lahore were NTSC (Region 1) so they work perfectly fine here. That there print quality is total crap (atleast for English flicks) is another issue. Pakistani songs and stuff are good quality even on VCDs.

Yeah, it's important you check the region before you get the DVDs. I bought The Fast and Furious Collector's Edition DVD for my cousin in England. He got it and couldn't watch it cause it was Region 1 and he has a Region 2 DVD player. So I think he watches it on his computer instead.

I know my mamoo has bought some DVDs from Karachi that don't work here. Then again, they might just be crappy copies.

Hkhan, believe it or not, Pakistan in cheezoon me aap ke desi canada sey agey nikal gya hai... While you are out here saying pirated DVDs are unlikely to exist in Pakistan, I got an Indian DVD for rent about one and a half year ago, and oh yes, it was a DVD alright... I even got an english one, and out of curiosity, pulled the center speaker wire, and all I got was audio and effects, confirming that the Disc was 5.1.

You Pirate!!!

Anywayz, the print thing youre talking about, if a DVD is replicated from an original DVD, why would the print be crap? I mean its digitally copied, not like a tape recording... I think you must have gotten a bootleg theatrical copy of some movie which was not yet released on a DVD...

yeah thats what i meant..i should have read ur post first

$300??? Dude, you can get region-free [Brand Name] DVD Players for as low as $50 on eBay. Problem solved.

And about the print quality, never get a movie thats still running in the theatres, go watch it there instead. But if it's available on DVD, then it's not a problem. Sometimes, screener copies of movies are also copied into pirated DVDs, which are just as good as the ones that will "officially" - and legally - come out in a few months. But screener copies are illegal as well.

Do as you wish. :)

 Partner…it’s not that. We have local companies producing DVDs off original DVDs so the quality is almost identical. Aap ne to bas poori bisti he kar di :bummer:
