I am finally thinking of getting a burner. I need it so that I can make copies of family events/functions which are on DVDs mostly, movie format I think. Which burner do you guys recommend? Ive looked at the external one by Sony, with a price tag of around $250 I think.
^ Even!, BenQ DW1620, Cheep, very Low noise, Fastest in burning DVDs in Plus Format (DVD+R). I never got any complaints.

BenQ, is it available in the US? I would assume I would have to order it from the internet, as I dont recall seeing it at bestbuy or circuitcity? All of you are recommending pioneer, does anyone know the approximate price and the model number for that?
i’ve heard countless stories about DVDs written with Sony burners not working with other drives. i’ve experienced 2 dead cd burners (sony) 1 month after the warranty expired.
I have a Sony DRU-530 (8X) External DVD-RW with FW/USB2 support since last year. It hasn't given me any problems at all. I got it from Office Depot for US$ 140 on a special promo ($45 mail in rebate and $ 30 discount). Sony now even offers Double Layer burners at 16X speed.
If you want to go for the best one, go for the Plextor. It is also available in 16X speed. But it is one of the most expensive ones around as well.
I have used Pioneer as well and found it to be incompatible with lots of media out there.
