DVD burner help...

i got a toshiba laptop (e15 av-101) and the dvd burner that comes with it is Mat****a UJ-830S - after doing some reading seems like that theres a problem with the burner (all the burners with that model number) , contacted toshiba and they replaced it with the same damn burner.

if anyones having the same problem and might knwo where i can get a firmware update pelase let me know?

Re: DVD burner help...

I would not recommend a firmware update, unless it is provided by Matsu*a or the Laptop manufacturer. Matsua burners are tricky and picky. You have to experiment with media to find the brand that it "likes". When recording using DVD Shrink or Nero, the drive will only run at 1 x speed. To the best of my understanding the drive is "rip locked" at 1x speed, to prevent (or greatly inconvenience) pirating. This is a great shame, a bit like owning a sports car but with 2, 3, 4 and 5 gears blanked off at the gear stick. So, not being a big expert, I suppose we might need some form of “hack” to disable the “rip lock”. For the reason above, I can't see Matsu***a being too keen on providing one. I get the impression that this is a fairly new drive and the market for a “hack” is not out there yet, but this may change with time.

Hint: Try using either Verbatim DVD+R 8X Certified or TDK DVD-R (8x)

Re: DVD burner help...

todd:- you forgot to mention Shrink and Nero also add "Shrink creates an ISO-File. Sonic Program creates from Iso-File to DVD. Speed almost always at 8x"

GenSec why not you contact Toshiba and discuss this problem with them directly? what I gathered from ur post is that you "READ" about the problem.. are you REALLY facing the same problem??

Re: DVD burner help…

my dvd burner died as well … after lying to the tech support for an hour… they issued an RMA , so they will send a new one…

firmware can help… in my case… it killed the whole thing… i wasn’t even able to run the sony’s drive check tool after applying the fimware…

one suggestion that did make sense was changing the burner to MASTER IDE…

Re: DVD burner help…

yes i am currently facing the problem, an di did contact them and they replaced the exact same drive

Re: DVD burner help…

KK, if you are creating an ISO from sctarch then YES but if you are trying to burn the ISO using the Matsu-Sheeta UJ-830S then NO, it will not burn at 8X (speaking from personal experience ;))

Re: DVD burner help…

Lately I’ve not been happy with Toshiba either. My laptop’s hard drive died and guess what brand that was. Its fully under warranty but both Sony and Toshiba are pointing fingers at each other. Previously with other vendors I never had trouble replacing drives. Bad Toshiba! :bailan:
