These are durians ![]()
They are also known as Jackfruit. Its funny how something that smells so terrible can taste so delicious. Several supermarkets in the UK have banned stores from selling them as customers complained about the smell.
i didn’t know they were called durian!
oh, those are yummy, i haven’t had them in years
and i dont’ fancy the tinned ones.
my nani used to boil the seeds in salted water, or put them in a curry… has anyone ever had those? they taste like boiled, salted peanuts ![]()
human, i guess a darker colour means that the fruit is riper..
How can anyone stand the smell!!!!!

are you sure? everywhere I have seen durian they have also been referred to as jackfruit.
Durian smell very bad but taste very good.
I had some in Thailand but have not been able to find a good source for fresh ones in the US.
They actually taste quite nice dried, and this eliminates the odour.
^oh yes, i have had jackfruit chips… dried, fried and salted.. delicious.
how are durian and jackfruit different? ![]()
Not sure zohra-
In Thailand there are 2 diff names for them:
Durian is thurian (scientific name is- durio zibenthis)
Jackfruit is khanun (scientific name is- artocarpus heteriphyllus) and I believe it may have smaller more dense spikes.
human:
“To choose a durian, pick a fruit which is comparatively light and whose stem appears big and solid. When shaking a good durian, the seed should move. Maturity is indicated when the middle of the fruit exudes a strong, but not sour smell. Finally, an inserted knife should come out sticky — this is the best indication that the fruit is ripe. Cut fruit perishes fairly rapidly. Avoid fruit with holes: worms may have prior claims.”
**The book Durian: Fruit Development, Postharvest Physiology, Handling and Marketing in ASEAN, edited by Sonthat Nanthachai (ASEAN Food Handling Bureau, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 1994) lists 9 ways to detect the ripeness of a durian: \B]
*In many varieties, the tips of the spikes turn darker brown than the bases of the spikes.
*The spike tips also become slightly elastic and more flexible
*The grooves between spikes expand and turn darker
*Depending on variety, the fruit stem may become either more stiff or more flexible than unripe fruits
*The abscission zone in the fruit stem just above the fruit tends to bulge
*The sutures in the rind where the sections will split apart become more noticeable
*The fruit when tapped has a hollow sound—if a solid sound, it’s not ripe; when shaken, the best fruits have a sound of something moving inside, of fruit sections knocking shell
*The sap from the fruit stem will be clear and sweet; in unripe fruits, it is thick, sticky, and not sweet
*If a small “window” into the fruit is cut to check out the insides, the fragrance will be stronger and the pulp more colorful than unripe fruits

thanks, Mary, i think you are right, they are two different things as the pictures and descriptions below will show:
Durians and Jackfruit comparison
The durian is considered as “the king of all tropical fruit”. The durian fruit is very big and heavy. A durian can weight up to 10 pounds. The whole skin consists of big, sharp and hard spines! Asian people are really fans of this ‘king’. To open a durian, you need to insert a knife between the spines. The durian is high in proteins, minerals and fats. The durian is one of the most expensive fruits. For Asian people it tastes so good that it is worth the money!

Jackfruit is the largest tree-born fruit in the world. The jackfruit can reach 40 kilos in weight and up to 36 inches long and 20 inches in diameter! The exterior of the jackfruit is green or yellow when ripe. The interior consists of large bulbs of yellow, banana-flavored flesh. Opening the fruit, will bring you a nice and soft odor like the pineapple or banana.
