Duration of an Engagement

What is generally the duration of an engagement in our culture?

Generally I’ve come across ones that last from a month to a year. Also, is there a difference in duration if someone gets engaged (and then married) within family/relatives as opposed to those that are engaged (then married) outside of family/relatives?

In addition, what is the duration like when engaged to someone oversees within and outside of family?

Re: Duration of an Engagement

Well, my parents don't believe in engagement, they watn to do the nikkah as early as they can and then rukhsati can come after that. I've known engagements that lasted 20 years (in cases where the bride n groom were promised to each other from bachpan), and some engagements that were two months long. I remember something my teacher told me, she said engagements should not last more than a year. Four to twelve months is enough time to plan a wedding and/or get to know someone.

Re: Duration of an Engagement

Nah... I'm not talking about bachpaan ki engagements. I'm inquiring about the ones where you get engaged as a grown up.

a yr.

Re: Duration of an Engagement

I personally don’t believe in engagements but on average, engagements last from 1-2 years before the couple get married (or break up:bummer: ). I think…

Re: Duration of an Engagement

Okay, well I don’t think most “engagements” in our culture last for more than a year, generally speaking of course. Either they get married or they break up. Of course this doesn’t include the 5-6 years the couple were dating if it were a love marriage :halo:

Re: Duration of an Engagement

But there is an exception for a person who goes out of country for study/job b4 he goes back to get married or something. This can usually take about 2-3+ years.

Re: Duration of an Engagement

^ Well usually if it's that situation, like going overseas, i think most families will opt for nikkah then rukhsati when he or she returns

Re: Duration of an Engagement

Not always though. Some ppl would prefer engagement if the person is going overseas rather than Nikah.

Re: Duration of an Engagement

I suppose 2-3+ years engagement with someone oversees must be when the guy is supposed to return to Pakistan after completing school.

I was more or less correct then by assuming that engagements usually last a year.

Re: Duration of an Engagement

Yes 2-3+ is for overseas when the person is to return back to pak. And yes, as i've seen, the eng. usually last about 1 year or so b4 the couple make it or break it.

Re: Duration of an Engagement

duration of engment its very touch topic what i feel that direct nikkah is good without going on angament bcoz both suffer alot when they both get eng in early so naturally they wanted to talk and discuss life style with each other but your parents would not allow u to talk on phone and many things which u wanted to do .....................so its better to do nikkah instead of engament nikkah and in islam there is not any thing mention like engament and it creates frustration in both girl and boy bcoz they cannot talk freely

Re: Duration of an Engagement

My official engagement was 1.5 years. But I think the shorter the better.

Re: Duration of an Engagement

yes if it shorter then it is better otherwise nikkah is good stronge relation

Re: Duration of an Engagement

Well.....I don't know why a person would even go for engagement. I mean just go for Nikah and get it over with. If you look at it from Islamic point of view, does it even exist in Shariah....

just wondering:whistling
