dupatta or no dupatta?

Your thoughts?

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

^Do you mean with regular formal outfits or with bridalwear?

With regular formal outfits, I think it depends on the outfit. A dupatta isn’t necessary with long, flowing gown-like outfits or maxi-type outfits, like these:

It looks cumbersome and makes the outfit look a bit busy. The same is true with some super long anarkali outfits, like this one:

If the outfit is more streamlined and not as heavy, the dupatta works well as an accessory and can enhance the look.

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

^Agree!

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

We had a thread on this a while back.. Lots of comments on decency etc.

I agree with Mezhgan.. I tend to think they're not really needed but each to their own..

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

It gets in the way of my dhoti

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

tumhaarii dhoti meN kaaNTe haiN kia jisse ulajh kar DupaTTaa aTakne kaa Dar ho? :cb: :stuck_out_tongue:

Not needed with maxis

dupatta or no dupatta?

Sorry I didn't realize my thread was so broad. I generally meant with regular outfits.

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

I take dupatta or stole with every dress. Casual, formal, semi formal etc. Its personal choice really. I agree with the above posts that it might not be necessary with certain type of dresses but not taking one is a little out of my comfort zone.

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

Duppatta always, call me old fashioned, but why wear apne clothes and leave the duppatta out? you wouldnt leave the trousers out, so why duppatta? it completes the look. Western clothes is a different story. my 2 cents worth. :snooty:

Already discussed here in detail :

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

Somehow I feel odd w/o a duppatta/scarf unless I am wearing a sweater/jumper which is loose and not accentuating my body. But for desi wear, I think for 90+% outfits, a duppata/scarf is a must otherwise the outfit just looks incomplete.

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

duppata is part of desi dress. i would never wear desi outfit without the duppata.
its classy!

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

I think you should never ever think of wearing any dress without dupatta... If you are a Muslim, its like disrespecting your own self in the name of modernism. Plan to wear dupatta and i know Allah Pak will set you apart form the rest in a unique way... believe in my words :)

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

It depends on what kind of outfit it is, the cloth material, and what your body's figure is. If I had a very full bust then I would wear a dupatta even with those long flowy dresses.
But since I don't have a full bust I sometimes make outfits without dupattas. Also depends on what kind of guests they are.

By the way, I don't believe the whole religious issue. Modesty and religion are not mutually exclusive. I'm not religious at all but I'm very modest. I've never worn tight fitting or sleeveless clothes. It's just a matter of personal choice and style.

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

It's definitely not a religious issue.. more a question of personal taste..

Nowhere in the Qur'an does it say an actual dupatta is needed.. If it did other practising Muslims wouldn't be wearing shorter scarves fastened at the neck as they do in a lot of societies..

From a religious perspective as long as the chest is properly covered there's no need for a dupatta as well..

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

Thanks Proto! I had thought there was a thread. Was just curious. I also think it depends on the shape of the shirt. I too am slim so I also think it gets pulled off. Plus I love love love the look of boat necks and Chinese collars which most of my clothes have so those are hardly even a neckline. None for the boat necks. When it's a scoop, I consider wearing a dupatta then but have been going out without for the last year since people have said it looks fine without. I was always small (short and skinny) so dupattas always felt so bulky on me.

just checked out out the link. Now I remember that thread! Thanks

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

Disagree. The dupatta is a cultural piece, yes. But the Quran states that believing women should "draw their head-coverings over their bosoms" - meaning wear a head covering that covers the chest. Whether that's a dupatta or a niqaab or whatever, it's up the individual.

Regarding the dupatta, I wouldn't wear a suit without it - again for my own cultural as well as religious views.

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

^If that was the most accepted interpretation most religious Muslims would be wearing much longer scarves like desis..

Arabs and others tend to wear a much shorter scarf.. The more religious women often wear a jilbaab or outer covering to be sure their bodies are fully covered but a long dupatta/scarf is not common or thought of as being needed..

Re: dupatta or no dupatta?

dupatta or scarf . yes
