If dupatta's a hassle and you sort of do want to cover your head (although I feel you don't right now), then you can always take hijab. You can pin it up nicely and it'll give you a neat look.
That way you wouldn't have to worry about the untidy not-so-professional look and you'd also be covering your hair and hopefully meeting your conservative family background/status.
