Joining the Audi Nanuk Quattro Concept unveiling, Ducati has pulled the covers from the 899 Panigale at Volkswagen Group Night ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show. The 899 is very similar to its big brother, the 1199 Panigale, except for some key differences intended to make it a more accessible superbike.
The most notable difference is the 899’s detuned Superquadro two-cylinder engine, which makes 148 horsepower and 73 pound-feet of torque with a reduced bore and stroke of 100mm x 57.2mm, compared to the 1199’s 112mm x 60.8mm. The engine remains a fully stressed member of the bike’s monocoque. Another key difference is the use of a more conventional, dual-sided swingarm in place of the bigger bike’s single-sided unit.
Despite the decrease in horsepower, the 899’s power-to-weight ratio of 2.9 pounds per horsepower (using the 425-pound wet weight with no rider) is symbolic of its track-oriented nature. It also includes many of the electronic aides of the 1199, such as triple-stage anti-lock brakes, electronic throttle control, Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Brake Control (EBC).
The 899 rides on ten-spoke wheels, 17 x 3.5 inches up front and 17 x 5.5 inches at the rear. They’re wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tires sized 120/70ZR-17 and 180/60ZR-17, respectively. Brembo brakes handle stopping duties, while Showa BPF (Big Piston Forks) fully-adjustable front forks are paired with a fully adjustable rear shock from Sachs to soak up any road imperfections.
