I’m travelling abroad and will have at least a day in Dubai so any suggestions on places to visit near Dubai International Airport?

That depends on what season you'll be traveling in. In summer you can't really do anything other than visit the shopping malls. Because it's gonna be too hot to do anything else.
If you go in spring or autumn there are other possibilities too.

Going to be in Dubai in March. Suggestions of any places that are easy to get to near the airport would be great.

March is very good weather-wise. Since you're asking for places close to the airport I'm assuming you're not planning on getting a hotel to stay overnight. Among the major Shopping Malls, Festival City is closest to the airport. However Deira City Center is also not far and is easier to get to if you don't have a car. Just take the Metro from the Airport and after 2 or 3 stops (I don't remember the exact number) you'll be at Deira City Center.
If you want to do a Desert Safari (which I highly recommend) you need to have an entire afternoon (from 3 PM onwards) + evening available. The tour operators would pick you up from a place of your choice and would drop you there again. So if you have that much time, that'd be a great activity.
If you like waterslides you could go to Wild Wadi or Aquaventure, but for those you need to have a full day (from morning to afternoon) and both of them are not really close to the airport.
If you're into "sightseeing" you could go to the Souks in Deira and Bur Dubai. Those are not too far from the airport and you can get there with the Metro as well.

^ Thanks for that. Yeah we're not stay overnight but we have a whole day nearly, get there for 9am and flight isn't til late at night. Just wanted to get out and see some of Dubai so the suggestions are great :)
