How do you have an emotional attachment to a place that you have never lived for an extended period of time and more so where you have no connection save for extended family?

Affection for Pakistan should then die with the emigrant generation since their children have have neither lived in Pakistan for extended periods and save for extended family, they have no other connection to Pakistan.**

My family is Mohajir as well. While I identify as Pakistani and not by the term. I honestly have more steady roots in the US or Switzerland than in Pakistan. But my loyalty is also applies to Pakistan because it is the culture I was brought up in, the society that defines me in the US and in Switzerland.

Also no you can’t have loyalties to both.**** The next time we have a war and don’t worry there will be a next time, you gonna cheer on the Indians to kill Pakistanis?**

Why measure or test loyalty only in times of war? Why should loyalty have to be declared in anticipation of war?**

Not to dilute the serious nature of the post, but using my nieces as an example, they are dual citizens of the US and Canada - and cute little things they are, they root for American teams for many sports, but Canada when it comes to hockey. Despite US-Canadian rivalries, they were taught that they can be loyal to both countries.

I’m not ignorant about either the history or the current political climate in India and Pakistan. But, I find the absolute statements of condemnation of either country to smack of intolerance.

@ TLK: Given that Nikki is from India and you’re from Pakistan, what message do you share with your daughters about their “loyalties”?
