I have DSLR but If I have to do it over, I would buy digital cam first.

This is an extremely difficult question to answer. Claims are hard to make unless there is a constant that is being compared. How small of a budget are you speaking of and what are your photography goals?

Ask yourself:

-What type of photos am I going to shoot?
-Am I going to print photos? If so, what size would be my max print?
-Do I need a camera to chase around my kids? Something that can take many photos very quickly?
-Do I need a camera to take low light photos like at a concert or dimly lit area?
-Can I carry a larger camera or should I stick with a smaller body?
-Will I be practicing high speed photography?

budget DSLR means entry level DSLR’s you cant go below that can u :aq:

we are talking abt DSLR Cameras which clearly defines what sort of cameras are we going to talk abt. So this thread is not for some one who is going to buy a camera(probably 1st time) and does not know what kind he/she wants. This thread is for those who know what SLR stands for and what is the extra D in front of it. So basically if you know what DSLR means, you need not to ask these questions which are excellent set of question as Aisha said :rotfl: She has worked for big labels so she must be right :slight_smile:

Anyways I am going to start with entry level/budget DSLRs

1st up is
**Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS / Kiss F)
**
One of the most inexpensive among top 4 brands(Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sony Alpha). It is a successor of EOS 300D which was launched in 2003 and was regarded as the 1st affordable DSLR. Current predecessor is EOS 450D which offer a great feature set and image quality.

I wanted to take pic from difficult angels. On digital cam,on the screen, you can see what camera sees. So you can put cam on floor and take pics. etc
Plus now I know there is lot more to photography then a camera.
SO
A small half decent digital cam would do just fine to get any one started. I am thinking about getting one too.

I am just looking for a bit of info so I don’t have to send our friends looking at 50 different links. Most newbies will not have any clue of the detalis mentioned on the spec sheets on dpreview.

I understand your thread now, and what you are doing is creating a database of all the budget cameras out there and giving them a general rating, not a specific rating. That is a great idea for people to get a basic understanding. Good job.

If they need something in particular, they can just post here and I am sure somebody will put them in the right direction.

I look forward to checking out this thread.

Thanks for this info. It sounds like you can benefit from “liveview”

This is a feature in certain DSLR’s that will allow you to see your scene through the screen prior to taking the shot. This feature is not really included in any budget camera, but if you define your budget I can help you more.

I really think you should consider the Nikon D5000.

You can swivel the screen out and take your interesting angle shots.

There are so many entry level camera’s now a days it gets hard to be able to recommend anything. If somebody says " i like to take photos of my son’s sports games" then I can help find a budget camera that is good for that purpose.

Otherwise, to any new person to photography, they will have no clue what fps is, or ISO etc. So why just post a bunch of specs on camera’s that new people…*“those who know what SLR stands for and what is the extra D in front of it” *will not understand

  • well i am not sure wat kinda photos i am interested in shooting … love micro shoot, nature, portraits, event…

  • i probably will print some really nice photos in normal or 8x11 size photo…but not quite sure…

  • no i am not gona b chasing kids… but depends on the situation… i might

  • its not like i am always gona have gud lighting…sometimes ur subject doesnt have enough light around it… so u have no other choice but to take pic in low light

  • i would rather stick with small body…easy to carry around

  • high speed photography… probably … why not?

oh and budget is around 600 CND$

I think the best entry level camera is Nikon D40

Besided the Nikon D5000 that PandyaPhoto recommended, you should also check out Sony Alpha 300 and 350 or the newer, soon to be released 330 and 380. All these models have LiveView and an articulating screen. What Sonys do not have is video, which Nikon D5000 does (720p @ 30fps).

You should also consider Canon T1i, which has LiveView and video but no articulating screen.

The Sony's can be had for $600-$700, the Nikon for $850, and the Canon for $900. (All prices include kit lenses).

If you want budget and want DSLR … then you want Sony Alpha 200, that is what I got recently. And the missus has been taking a few pics on it.

also if I buy a camera. The most important thing would be image quality and then any thing else. Here is comparison between A200 and 1000D which roughly cost the same.

Next on the line up is OLYMPUS E-420, its spec sheet looks more like something we’d expect from a mid-range SLR
it out classes its rival by:

  • being the smallest and lightest DSLR available in market by any manufacturer.
  • has a live view feature
  • dust reduction system
  • wireless flash control
  • bracketing
  • customizable mirror lock-up

PS. with all these feature, I might consider buying this as my entry level camera specially when it comes with all these amazing features. It would have been the ideal camera only if it had little better image quality.
