I have been using glycolic acid products for my acne prone facial skin. They are a wonder but then i have been getting very dry, scaly skin. How can i remove the dead skin (its not peeling but just dryish patches) without aggravating my acne and bringing it back by spreading the bacteria or something?
I remember when i got glycolic peels done at the spa, the lady made me come back in 10 days when the new skin had emerged and used some sort of scalpel like blade thingy to basically scrape the dead skin off. Is anyone familiar with what that could be and what i could get at the drug store to get similiar effects?
I've been using Proactive on my skin, and so I use its moisturizer after I've exfoliated and toned. However, the moisturizer is too light for my dry skin. For the past two months the only other moisturizer I've been using is Vaseline. It's actually worked amazingly well. My skin feels much smoother and softer, and I haven't had any of the breakouts that I thought would occur from such a seemingly greasy product.
Femme, thanks a bunch for reminding me about the olay facials. I had totally forgotten about those. I need to stock up on those.
baigette: Apricot scrub i love but i am vary of using it since i think it may aggravate the breaktous and make them active again.
Sahar: i cannot absolutely use Vaseline I get clogged pores very easily so i have to be so careful with using anything that is non-comogenic. But i have heard it working for others.
Legally: I use Eucerin’s sunscreen. Its the only one that is non-greasy and light enough to be worn in summer. And i usually exfoliate about once a week but i am trying to get rid of some active acne and hence avoiding that.
I got these loofah type thingsy for the face from The Body Shop. I think i will try those once the breakouts have healed.
Ira if you are getting peels then you should be using that companys moisturizer and sun screen.
Im assuming you are getting MDs done? Their sunscreen is not greasy at all.
Exfoliating will not really annoy the active acne at all.
Infact exfoliating will help the active acne in calming down.
What exfoliating basically does is get rid of the dead skin covering the acne bits.
If you leave the dead skin there then the acne doesnt have room to breathe and that does more damage rather than good.
So go ahead and exfoliate.
You'd be doing worse if you picked on 'em.
As for moisturizing. Its a common belief that if ppl dont moisturize or light moisturize they'd be helping their skin get rid of acne.
Untrue if you let your skin dry then acne spreads more.
You can ask any expert they'll confirm what i've just written.
Sahar, it depends on how you use it.
The active ingredient in Proactive is Benz.
If you google up Benz it'll tell you the side effects and long term effects of the product.
It thins your skin a lot.
Pretty soon your skin will become extra sensitive to sun and very prone to wrinkles
i have skin that behaves in the summers but gets dry and flaky in the winters if i dont moisturize supremely. some things that have helped me...
drink alot of water/ eat fruits.
try a banana/strawberry mask on the face since it gets rid of dryness temporarily.
use extra virgin raw coconut oil on the face at night as a moisturizer.
there's a moisturizer by this brand aveeno with sunscreen that is targetted towards sensitive skin and its called a calming moisturizer or something like that.
i totally agree that if u dont moisturize enough the acne flares on the skin get even worse. try and keep the skin clean but at the same time balance the PH of your skin by moisturizing effectively.

Thanks a bunch.
use celtaphil, it is very thick and i was scared to use it at first but trust me it is just amazing. it is for cronic dry skin. just use it for 2 days and u will nottice a huge difference. if u are scared to use it go to www.makeupalley.com and read the reviews, most of the people who used it are the one who are one acne medicine or very harsh acne treatment.
Legally, i am not doing peels at the moment. Havent gotten any since last summer. And i am also using what i believe to be a good moisturiser plus SPF by Eucerin.
Its not that i am scared of exfoliation I am just scared of using something that is too abrasive to mess wtih the active acne and not make it any better but spread the bacteria elsewhere. Because trust me, i have been ready for it to go away forever
Btw, i am on the Jan Marini line, so might try their moisturiser. Right now i am just on thier face wash and the bioclear. My esth wanted me to start out slow and let the skin get used to these products because they are pretty strong.
shweeto, yaar i am one of the unfortunate ppl with very horribly behaved skin. I cannot use anything with oil becuz i will breakout incessantly or develop white heads. I swear i have the most obnoxious, snobbish skin.
yanzala, thanks a bunch for the recommendation. I may try it although i wasnt too impressed with their cleanser. Btw makeupalley is my fav spot for reviews too
