So what is the main difference between the two types, let’s say Cetaphil cleanser which is available in a drugstore, costs less and is equally effective as let’s say Clinique’s cleanser which is available only in high end stores.

nothing much really :D
lets say tanning lotions both drug store brands and luxury brands have same chemical compund that is found in evry lotion :D
but few luxury brands are actually better than drug store brands jst have to check the ingredients to make sure that ur not paying more money for the same thing:D
i always do this jst match the ingredients in few brands and if expensive brand actually has different ingredients than othe rbrands then i buy it other wise i dont pay extra money :D

Depends on what it is I think....big differences in quality for some things, like foundation for example

well i have wasted my money on expensive foundations 
but finally i found foundaion from oriflame catalogue its not expensive its like 60 riyals but it actually is yellow based and suits desi skin and looks natural and i found it better than luxury brands so it really depends u have to try different stuff only big name doesnt make stuff better

In my early days of being in USA I worked as assistant manager at one of big chain drug stores and the internal memos showed that all the store brand things were being manufactured by the same company which made that national brand , so sedatives , lotions , shampoo, toothpaste whatever it may be was made and packed for store brand by the same national brand.
The company even guaranteed that if you are not satisfied with the store brand we will give you your money back and national brand for free. The satisfaction guarantee can never be more solid than that.
