Drug rehabilitation?

Sorry for opening up a successive thread in this Forum. Just wondering - how does the process of rehabilitating someone who is addicted to drugs, actually work? How do you wean them off of the drugs? Do you force them to quit ‘cold turkey’? i’ve heard of detoxification programmes a fair bit… how do these actually work, in real words, no scientific biological jargon please :halo: :o What’s entailed in a detox program? How is a drug addict weaned off his/her addiction?

kyoon bhey? you’re planning to start with a program? :hehe:

anyway, there are different methods, the one used in Holland is to steadily build off the amount of drugs used by an addict. Suppose a heroin addict, they don’t do cold turkey. Usually they would give him heroin, and each successive day or week, they will lessen the amount. Of course, to reinforce good behavior they will also give him a reward if he manages to stay on a lower level for like a month etc.
Heck, even in jails, drug addicts (who are in jail cuz of drugs) will get their amount of drugs if the authorities feel that he is at risk of developing a cold-turkey symdrome.

:p

The reason i was wondering is because, in a province bordering mine, they opened up 'safe injection' sites... and it's been a controversial idea from the start. It's supposed to give drug users a safe place to access clean needles, etc. Some other services i think they were thinking of offering were drug rehab and detox programmes. That started me wondering how these programs actually work. Plus you are starting to read a lot more in the papers about drug addicts in Muslim countries; the few drug rehab centers that are in operation in these Muslim countries, i'm just wondering how successful are they exactly?

If you are dealing with, say, a drug addict who's been abusing drugs for 20 years - i guess it would take a year or more to wean them off, right?

yes, it takes quite some time,…and there are even cases where the person didn’t get off the drugs.
Therefore, i think such a program is good cuz usually the problem with drug addicts is not so much their usage of drugs but the way they get their hands on it: so by supplying them those things it opens a way for them to be accepted by society once again

I’m proud to say that Holland was the first country to start with such an initiative :jhanda:

Re: Drug rehabilitation?

I guess it depends on the class of the drug and the extent of addiction, I suppose soft drugs like weed could be cold turkeyed like tobacco. But in the case of harder drugs its a matter of gradual improvement in a changed environment.
