Families of Drone Attacks Victim ask Nawaz to halt strikes
What he’s gonna do?
****ISLAMABAD: The families of Pakistani victims of US drone strikes on Thursday wrote to new Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif urging him to stop the campaign – by shooting the unmanned aircraft down if necessary.
The Peshawar High Court had on May 9 declared the CIA drone strikes targeting suspected Taliban and al Qaeda militants to be a “war crime” and ordered Islamabad to take steps to halt them.
Victims’ families and their lawyer Mirza Shahzad Akbar have written to Sharif urging him to heed the court’s ruling, which calls on the government to take the matter up at the UN Security Council.
While Islamabad regularly issues statements condemning the missile strikes as a violation of sovereignty, it has yet to take any stronger action publicly to pressure Washington to end the campaign, which began in 2004.
“The court has ordered the government of Pakistan and its security forces to administer a proper warning to the United States that future drone strikes will not be tolerated,” Akbar wrote in the letter, seen by AFP.
Akbar said that if Pakistan failed to persuade the US to stop the strikes through the United Nations, “the court has very clearly ordered to shoot down the drones”.
At a news conference with two relatives of drone victims, Akbar warned that Sharif would face contempt of court proceedings if he did not implement the court order within 14 days.
Mohammad Nazir, whose son was killed in a US drone strike in June 2006 in North Waziristan tribal district, a haven for insurgents, endorsed the demand and said he wanted revenge for his son’s death.
“My son was 25 years old, he was a labourer and was working in a house with other labourers in the night when the drone strike took place,” he told AFP.
“According to tribal law, you kill the son of that person who kills your son, so I will take revenge of my son’s killing whenever I have the opportunity.”
According to the British Bureau of Investigative Journalism, since 2004 up to 3,587 people have been killed in Pakistan by drone attacks, which Washington says are an effective weapon in the fight against Islamist militancy.
On Wednesday Sharif used his first speech as prime minister to urge the US to end the strikes and said a comprehensive strategy for tackling extremism should be worked out.

sure i have no problem being an idiot...but i dont want to be Khan the idiot...
let me say again so that you can understand
EVERY DRONE ATTACK IS CARRIED OUT WITH THE PERMISSION OF OUR MILITARY COMMAND. Our military had completely failed to eliminate the top leadership of taliban and the only success has been drone attacks. There is absolutely zero doubt that these drone attacks have caused a huge dent on taliban. They are always on move, they cannot have one center of excellence anymore and their top leadership continues to get killed. Their morale is donw. Killing of wali rehman was a huge blow few weeks ago.
But** Khan the idiot** and PMLN keep on spreading the taliban propaganda that innocents are getting killed and it is breeding terrorism...that is the biggest bul****.
How many of you actually live in Peshawar? go talk to local peoiple there....they are not that upset with drones...but Khan and PMLN are spreading wrong information.
Re: Families of Drone Attacks Victim ask Nawaz to halt strikes
there you go....taliban apologists trying different ways
i ask folks..what is the other way of eliminating taliban leadership?
drones have killed so many so many of taliban leaders
what is the track record of pakistan army killing taliban leaders before drone attacks? ZEROOO
that is why our military not only fully supports these drone attacks, they actually share intelligence wherever they can
Re: Families of Drone Attacks Victim ask Nawaz to halt strikes

An apologist is one who sympathizes with the taliban, and finds excuses for defending them. Who here is defending taliban, or any other kind of terrorists? We differ in our approach to eliminating terrorism and terrorists...not in our views against terrorism and terrorists.
We are lucky we dont live next door to a taliban...so we dont have to worry about our families being wiped away while a drone tries to level the house next door.
Re: Google could be blocked.. New IT Minister Anushe Rahman
^ Peshawar has voted for PTI overwhelmingly due to its policies on war on terror and drones. It's upto you of you don't want to trust the decision of the electorate.
Re: Families of Drone Attacks Victim ask Nawaz to halt strikes
Maybe the families of people killed by terrorists should meet with minister also. I am sure they are happy that the drones killed the men responsible for killing their loved ones.

ap iss track ko choray, do you even know, more than talibans, innocent ppl are killed in drones, kids and old ppl, women and this actually increases terrorism, when you are going to kill their innocent kids, wives and parents they will automatically becomes terrorists. I agree with silaaj We differ in our approach to eliminating terrorism and terrorists...not in our views against terrorism and terrorists.

oh yeah//do you have actual statistics? how do you know that? have you been to Peshawar? have you spoken to local? please devil
half of my family is based in peshawar these days for project development work....my brother actually lives there for last 12 months...most of the local people actually support drone attcaks ... it has broken the backbone of taliban by eliminating their top leadership..they have no one center anymore...they cannot sleep in one house for more than one night...that is why they want to negotoate now.
and what other alternative do we have? before drone attacks, our army killed zero taliban leaders...who killed mahsoood? who killed wali? drones did that...our army is supporting 200% drone attacks....
and you know what guys...most of you have started to support this approach because PTI is doing this.
I can guarantee that if PMLN was in power in NWFP and taking these actions you guys will be killing that approach
that is what bothers me most...we make emotional decisions and then try to defend them intellectually...

Achaa...so if drones have been so so so effective in Pakistan, why dont you advise the americans to use the same strategy in Afghanistan? Last I heard, they were failing miserably there, and are in a rush to get the heck out.

Do you want real solution? The real solution would be that Pakistan army actually uses intelligence against these goons instead of politicians/journalists and then eliminates these goons instead of "asking" foreign hands to do it. When you let foreign hands do it then we get 1000s of Raymond Davis on streets of Pakistan, you also let them control the destination of the country.
Re: Families of Drone Attacks Victim ask Nawaz to halt strikes
Nawaz will eat Paaye and Nihari Thats What He Will Do

allah aap ka bhalla kary
you are spot on...i agree
but our army couldn't do it...from 2002-2008 that is what everyone was asking and expecting our army to do it..but they could not deliver it...lack of enough intelligence, tough terrain, local support for taliban..whatever the reason was but our army could not kill one major single taliban leader..that is a reality
drones have scared the hell out of these animals called talibans....go talk to local people please....talibans cannot sleep more than once in any home..they have to be on move...their central command structure is shattered...and their leadership is on run and continue to get eliminated...
that is precisely what i suggested on gupshup pages many times few years ago..make a mission to kill every taliban leader... every-time new one comes, kill him in 3 months...that will kill the morale of these animals
i understand the risk of collateral damage but it is not as high as some people believe....and what is the alternative? start talking to taliban..we did that 2001-2009

you are not serious? are you
how much do you know abt the war dynamics in this region....meray bhai majority of top taliban leadership lives on Pakistani side not in Afghanistan...where is mullah umar?
now if US and nato forces have full land control of our region they will not use drone attacks and they said that many times but we did not allow them to enter in our space physically (and rightly so) ..hence drone attacks started and our army is fully on board..
Re: Families of Drone Attacks Victim ask Nawaz to halt strikes
According to an article in the Gulf Times, Pakistan will propose to the US that in exchange for the US ending drone strikes, Pakistan will eliminate militant bases in the FATA.
This suggests that Nawaz Sharif will replace drone strikes with a large-scale military offensive in the FATA.
If so, I think that this would be the best solution to the FATA militancy issue - Pakistan should take full control over every inch of its territory, whatever the cost in whoever’s blood.
Pakistan mulls trade-off with US over drone strikes
In an effort to persuade the US to cease drone strikes on Pakistani territory, the new government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will offer to eliminate ‘terrorist sanctuaries’ from the tribal areas itself, media reports revealed here yesterday.
A senior leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N engaged in foreign policy matters was quoted by Express Tribune newspaper as saying that Sharif will soon inform Washington that his government is ready to address US concerns pertaining to terrorist threats in Pakistan’s tribal region in return for the cessation of the CIA-piloted drone campaign.
He reiterated that the government is principally opposed to unilateral strikes on Pakistani territory and hence would urge Washington to put an end to the campaign.
“But having said that drone attacks must not be seen in isolation,” said the ruling party member, who asked to remain anonymous. “There are reasons for drone attacks and we have to address those.”
He explained that the newly-elected PML-N government was working on a new anti-terror strategy that not only opposes drone attacks but all elements violating the country’s sovereignty by keeping ‘safe havens on our territory.’

this is absolutely fine scientist…and i support it…it is an ideal soluton
but as i said before, our army couldn’t do it in the past…from 2002-2008 there was zero drone attack… everyone was asking and expecting our army to deliver ..but they could not deliver it…
lack of enough intelligence, tough terrain, local support for taliban..whatever the reason was but our army could not kill one major single taliban leader..that is a reality
i hope they can do it this time but if they cant for whatever reason..then what? that is where i support drone attacks as a strategic policy..these animals want to negotiate because they have a serious leadership crisis…they are fighitng withe ach other…they are scared.
and that is what i am urging my fellow gupshup members …to stop supporting a policy just because their beloved Khan is pushing for it…make a case for the policy not for a personality for god sake

Our government must set deadlines to army, give them milestones, if they are not able to deliver in the given time then heads must roll. Problem is the sincerity in army and civilian lacks which gives excuse to foreigners which is fine for both beghairat parties (civilians and army).

There were still many drone attacks before 2008. The number simply escalated after that.
The army's earlier efforts were hampered by both political and military mindsets. In particular, the full weight of the military was held back because military strategy still dictated that India was the main threat to Pakistan and so the majority of forces were held for defense on the eastern frontier.
What has changed now is both official military policy now reflecting militant activity to be the main security threat to Pakistan, as well as the election of a government that has a policy of peace with India.
Now is the opportunity to flood the FATA with Pakistani soldiers to take full control of the area and completely remove the premise for drone strikes.
It is worth pointing out that there has never been a drone strike in places where the Pakistani state has full control, such as Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, etc, even when militants were identified by the US as being there (as testified by witnesses who have seen FBI officials at raids).
